Prof Ron Chen has been conferred a second-class award of the 2012 State Natural Science Award -- the most prestigious award in the field of natural science in China -- based on significant scientific achievements obtained in his research project entitled "Fundamental Theory and Applications of Several Kinds of New Nonlinear Circuits and Systems". A presentation ceremony was held on 18 January 2013 in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
Six EE students have been selected as interns by Atos, the company responsible for the collection, consolidation and distribution of information at the London 2012 Olympics, to provide IT management services for the London 2012 Olympics.
Prof C H Chan, Prof K M Luk, Prof Quan Xue and Dr Hang Wong have recently been conferred the State Technological Invention (STIA) Second-class Award under the 2011 State Science and Technology Awards (SSTAs) for their project titled "Invention, theoretical and experimental investigation and applications of some novel antennas", a project of State Key Laboratory of Millimeter Waves.
The Department of Electronic Engineering has strengthened its teaching and research work by establishing the CityU-Microchip Centre, with full support from Microchip Technology Inc. (Microchip). A ceremony held on 14 March marked the official opening of the Centre.
With the support of industry, Electronic Engineering students will help promote e-learning by developing a new type of e-book, the CityBook, for local primary and secondary school students. The CityBook will look like an iPad but will be lighter and about the size of a double-sided 5R photo. The designers have incorporated a range of interactive elements to boost student learning.
The "Smart Antenna" Project, which is undertaken by CityU's State Key Laboratory of Millimeter Waves, was granted $12 million by the Innovation and Technology Fund. The research will focus on designing a "smart antenna" system for controlling the signal transmission and reception installed at mobile stations usually fixed on the rooftop of a building.
