EE Graduation Ceremony 2018

A Full House of Students joining JS1205 Programme Information Session and its complementary mBot Workshop


We are proud to present our graduates of 2018 at EE Graduation Ceremony held on 3 December 2018. Over 700 graduates, their parents and EE professors attended the ceremony to share the joyful and exciting moment together. Apart from individual presentation on our graduates, there was prize presentation to recognize the outstanding academic achievement of graduates and the excellent teaching of our professors. The big day ended joyfully by graduation photo taking with so many cheery and shining faces captured.

The First International CityU EE Conference

The First International CityU EE Conference has successfully concluded. The conference ran over three days and featured various plenary, technical, interaction and collaboration sessions. About 20 CityU EE alumni returned to share highlights of their work in academia, industry and government institutions. While the alumni cherished a chance to visit their former advisors, meet other faculty members and revisit their Alma mater, they have also brought much encouragement to the department by witnessing how far they have gone in their respective professional careers. Our current students benefitted greatly from our alumni’s heartfelt sharing regarding their technical expertise and perspectives on industrial trends. The conference program can be found here.

Dr Miu-Ling Lam, Associate Professor/Program Leader of Bachelor of Arts and Science in New Media, School of Creative Media of CityU, was invited to speak on the topic “Situating Science and Technology in New Contexts” on 21 November 2018. Dr Lam received CityU “Teaching Excellence Awards" in 2018.

CityU Information Day 2018

CityU Information Day 2018 was held on 13 October 2018 where thousands of prospective students and parents visited our exhibition booth, informative programme talks and interesting laboratory tours to understand more our majors and their career prospect as well as the learning environment at CityU-EE. We were so happy to see that visitors were amazed and impressed by the innovative projects and products developed by our professors and students.

OIS Final Presentation Competition


The 43 contestants, mostly Year 3 students, have accomplished the two month-long international experiential learning, which took place during the past summer semester in 6 countries. Under the Overseas Internship Scheme OIS 2018, they geared up to travel across the continent to the USA, the UK, Spain, Canada, Finland or France.

AI Summer Course for High School Students

A group of 30 high school students from 15 local secondary schools had a great time at our Department by joining the 2-week AI Summer Course in August 2018. After the eight intensive workshops, participating students are expected to serve as ambassadors to help deliver AI workshops and promote AI/ ICT education at their home schools. In just 2-week time, many of them found that they are more interested in learning AI, love to learn more about AI in the future, and will try to apply what they have learned. We do hope that they will carry on their passion on AI, grow strong and flourish in the related field one day.

CityU EE International Summer Camp Farewell and Closing Ceremony

Having travelled hundred or even thousand miles from home to arrive in Hong Kong, 60 overseas students spent 5 weeks on CityU campus to mingle with CityU EE undergraduates and some local senior secondary school students. Not only did they feel the vibrancy of this international metropolis, but also they built and programed their remote controlled airships. The hardest thing was the moment to say goodbye at the farewell and closing ceremony on 8 August 2018.

“Girls Go Tech”

Girls Go Tech

We are so honored to be a partner of the Women’s Foundation to help encourage junior secondary school girls from under-privileged backgrounds to pursue traditionally male-dominated STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) related subjects to maximize their future career options through the year-long school-based “Girls Go Tech” programme. Prof Stella Pang, Head and Chair Professor of EE Department, was invited to deliver welcoming remarks at the Closing Ceremony of the programme which was held on 4 July 2018 at CityU. Our Dr Ray Cheung (Associate Professor) is also a member of the Steering Committee of the programme in 2017-18 to guide the development and implementation of the programme. There were 520 F.1-F.2 girls from 13 schools benefited from the programme in the 2017-2018 cycle, showing significant improvements in their interest in and confidence around STEM, intention to study or work in STEM related fields, and enhanced proficiency in problem solving skills, analytical skills or communication skills. May the youngsters continue to flourish and enjoy in tech.

EE Honor Society Annual Dinner 2018 – Light Up!

It was the first Annual Dinner cum Inauguration Ceremony of its Executive Committee of the EE Honor Society, which was founded in February this year. A group of high-performing students, who aspire to become truly stand-out individuals by challenging themselves to step outside of their comfort zone, are foundation of this new student society. Like its theme of the event – Light Up, the evening was lighten up by the speech of the VIP, Mr. Peter Koo, National Leader of IT Advisory Services of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, who made himself available for the event as well as the host of the inauguration ceremony.

Pre-qualifier Mini-conference for First Year PhD Students

A mini-conference specially arranged for first year PhD students has been held on 8 June 2018 on campus. This is the first time having such an occasion for first year students to present their research work to faculty, research staff and peers in a form of poster. This is a pre-qualifying exhibition providing students a platform to get feedback from a wider audience and the opportunity to present work early on during their studies. Students enjoyed the exchange and discussion which inspired and steered their research direction.

A Technical Visit to Qianhai New District: Tencent, Huawei, CityU Shenzhen Research Institute, Southern University of Science and Technology

A 2-day trip to Qianhai New District, Shenzhen to pay a visit to the two heavyweights of the Chinese IT industry – Tencent and Huawei, was organized for a group of EE students. The kind of excitement our students experienced from this trip, mainly due to the enticing prospect of the R&D and career development opportunities in the area, was beyond words.

Novelty and Originality of Student Project Work Manifested in Final Year Project Competition 2018

The Final Year Project Competition 2018 was successfully held on 30 April 2018. A total of 30 projects entered semi-final of the competition which was a poster session. Six of them were immediately selected after the semi-final to compete in the final round held on the same day. Both semi-finalists and finalists were such professional and well-prepared to present their novel and innovative ideas in their project works to the judging panels and audiences.

CityU Scored the Highest “Expected Output Index” in Electrical and Electronic Engineering

CityU has been put at the top of the list worldwide for the field “Electrical and Electronic Engineering” by scoring “expected output index of 2.6”, according to Times Higher Education World University Rankings. It means that 26 percent of CityU’s scholarship in this area was in the top 10 percent of cited publications from 2014 to 2017.

The First Joint-School Student Symposium (第1屆“兩地三校”青年學生論壇)

The first 2-cities-3-universities (City University of Hong Kong, Harbin Institute of Technology and Sun Yat-Sen University) undergraduate student forum was held on 14 April 2018 at Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen).  The event was well participated by about 50 students coming from the three universities; among them, 14 were EE students of CityU. The forum discussed several timely Hi-Tec issues on both industry and education.  The host also invited Tencent (Machine Learning) Research Engineer to share his views and Hi-Tech perspectives at Tencent with students.  The event is highly successful enabling EE students in broadening horizons on Hi-Tech and Hi-Tech education in China and overseas.

Recently a bi-weekly departmental forum, focusing on multidisciplinary research, is successfully launched in the format of a faculties’ lunch greeting at Electronic Engineering Department. The forum consists of two sections of free discussions (before and after the talk) and a 20-30 min research-sharing presentation.

Gathering with EE Mentors and Tutors

On 23 March 2018, the Department organized a causal gathering among mentors, tutors and professors and around 20 participants joined the event. During the gathering, students provided constructive comment and feedback regarding the EE Student Mentoring and EE Peer Tutoring Scheme, and shared genuinely their study lives in EE Department. Everyone enjoyed the fruitful exchange and the nice food in a relaxing Friday evening.

Staff Get-together – Boat Trip in Sai Kung

It was such a wonderful get-together that EE staff had enjoyed some sunlight in a boat trip in Sai Kung on 11 March 2018. The staff took the boat trip for visiting St. Joseph's Chapel on Yim Tin Tsai (鹽田仔) and getting to hike for an hour in Sharp Island (橋咀洲). The trip ended with a dinner in a Chinese seafood restaurant in Sai Kung town. Everyone has had a lot of fun for this outdoor activity.

EE Soft Skills Series - (III) Further Your Career By Studying Postgraduate Degree Abroad

The third soft skills workshop, delivered by Prof Tommy Chow, focused on advising students on pursuing postgraduate degree abroad. A final year student, getting 3 offers from Columbia University, University of California San Diego, and University of California Irvine, partnered with Prof Chow on the day to share the opportunities for postgraduate studies in overseas countries; tips on how to best present the application; and important things to note in preparing applications.

Research Symposium for Postgraduate Students 2018

Around 150 EE postgraduate students, faculty members and research staff got together at the Research Symposium held on 9 March 2018. This year, a total of 52 posters were submitted and presented, and seven were selected to receive the Best Presenter Awards according to topical track. The day rounded off with invaluable exchanges and conversations.

Sharing Session on Good Teaching Practices

There are no rights or wrongs for teaching styles and practices. However, good teaching practices will make classroom experience and teaching more effective and students more motivated. A session to share good teaching practices by EE teachers was organized on 1 March 2018 with Prof K M Luk, Dr Joshua Lee and Dr K T Ko invited to share on topics “How to raise student motivation?”, “Effective teaching in large classes”, and “Making effective use of video/voice recordings of lectures”.

Very enthusiastic exchanges of experiences were made within the two-hour session.


EE Soft Skills Series (II) Interpersonal Skills in Semi-formal Occasions

The second soft skills workshop organized for EE students was titled “Interpersonal Skills in Semi-formal Occasions”. Prof Tommy Chow shared his life experience and personal stories with students at EE Innovation Centre on 9th February 2018 afternoon. Nowadays in an interconnected world people of different national and cultural backgrounds come across others in both professional and casual situations, some people skills, which seem trivial, such as how you project your voice, when you should crack a joke to break the ice, or what words you use in your conversations, would however have a huge impact on how others perceive you. Prof Chow reiterated in the workshop that we must always respect others and know how to show our respect in a way that others feel comfortable with us.

EE Quiz Competition (EE常識問答比賽), the first time of its kind in EE Department, was successfully held on 7th February 2018 evening at the EE Innovation Centre, where 9 teams of EE undergraduate students competed with each other intensely by pressing the buzzer, giving their answers, and flipping up and down their score cards placed next to them. Two emcees of the evening read out about 200 questions in total one by one; contestants and audience learned lots of common technology knowledge throughout the competition. It was an evening full of claps, cheers as well as a strong smell of nervousness mixed with excitement. The winners fully demonstrated their quick wickedness and strong determination. If you want to experience how it is like, you must join us the next year when this EE Quiz Competition is held again.

MIT Distinguished Scholar Shared High Impact Research and Education

Prof Vincent W. S. Chan, the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Professor of Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science of Massachusetts institute of Technology visited EE from 29 – 31 January 2018 to share his views and expertise in high impact research and education. Constructive exchanges with faculty and students have fostered opportunities in research collaborations, interdisciplinary research and high impact education.
