The programme aims at exposing you
to the latest developments in computer and information technology,
in addition to the theoretical aspects of both hardware and software.
The primary goal is to produce engineers who possess the skills
necessary for the design and implementation of computer, multimedia,
Internet and mobile related systems. You will be prepared for employment
in a wide range of economic sectors mainly in technology, but also
in business, banking, finance, and trading in Hong Kong and the
Asia-Pacific region.
For students with Business Intelligence
Minor, they will also be equipped with business knowledge in order
to prepare them for employment in the business, banking and finance
sectors. In particular, graduates will be able to apply statistical
methods and quantitative tools to business planning and decision
making.
With the rapid development in computer
technology and multimedia applications, students will find ample
opportunities in both hardware and software development positions
for IT products and services. Potential employers include computer
product development companies, software and system solutions companies,
banks, finance and insurance companies, and the Hong Kong Government.
In view of this, the programme provides an optional ‘Business Intelligence
Minor’ for students embarking on a career in the business sector.
A recent IDC
Report on manpower survey shows that the Asia Pacific region
will face a shortage of 221,000 IT professionals, leading to keen
competition for qualified IT professionals. In China, where demand
for IT networking skills is highest, the skill gap will amount to
192,300 in 2009. Hong Kong will be short of 2,800 engineers with
networking background and advanced skills such as wireless, security
and IP telephony.
A ZDNet
Asia Special Report on Asia’s IT Employment Trends 2007 reveals
that there is a soaring demand for qualified IT talents in Hong
Kong. IT professionals in Hong Kong are the highest-paid amongst
the seven Asian countries surveyed including India, Malaysia, Philippines,
Singapore and Thailand, with an average annual salary of HK$404,144.
The report also shows that the demand for IT professionals within
the banking sector is growing.
