Bronze Prize and Merit Prize in the Broadband World Forum Asia 2008

Miss Tung Hoi Yan and Mr Lam Ka Lun, our two MPhil students have respectively won the Bronze Prize and Merit Prize of the Outstanding Paper Award in the Broadband World Forum Asia 2008. Miss Tung's winning paper is "A Power Saving Energy Management System" and her supervisor is Dr K F Tsang, while Mr Lam's winning paper is "An Economic & Efficient Telemedicine System" and his supervisor is Dr K T Ko.

First Prize in the IEEE Region 10 Student Paper Contest (Postgraduate Category)

Our PhD fresh graduate Dr CHIU Leung, supervised by Dr XUE Quan, has won the First Prize of the IEEE Region 10 Student Paper Contest (Postgraduate Category) for his paper "Performance Enhancement of Microwave Circuitries Using Parallel Strip Line". Dr Chiu was awarded the Second Prize in the same contest in 2007, and has won more than 10 regional, national and local prizes during his study in CityU.

Second and Merit Award Winners in the 3rd IEEE Hong Kong Signal Processing Postgraduate Forum

Mr K H Ng, our MPhil fresh graduate has received the Second Award in the 3rd IEEE Hong Kong Signal Processing Postgraduate Forum, while Mr K W Chan, our PhD student has received the Merit Award in the same occasion. Their supervisors are Dr L M Po and Dr H C So respectively. The winning papers of Mr Ng and Mr Chan are respectively "Search Patterns Switching for Motion Estimation Using Rate of Error Descent" and "A Novel Subspace Approach for Wireless Sensor Network Positioning with Range Measurements".

Bronze Award Winner in the WTISD-HK Telecommunication Innovation Competition 2008

Mr Andy Wong Yee Tak, our BEngECE (Business Intelligence Minor) Year 1 student, has won the Bronze Award in the ICT Innovation Competition of the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day Hong Kong (WTISD-HK) 2008, Applications Development Proposal category. The competition, aiming to arouse students' interest in and demonstrate the opportunities brought by mobile applications development, was organized by the Communications Association of Hong Kong (CAHK) and the Honorable Sin Chung-kai, Legislative Councillor (IT).

IEEE MTT-S Undergraduate/Pre-graduate Scholarship 2007

Mr. WU Weijiu Joe, our BEngECE Year 3 student supervised by Prof C H Chan, has been awarded the IEEE MTT-S Undergraduate/Pre-graduate Scholarship for Fall 2007 by the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society, USA. His winning project is named "2.45GHz Power Amplifier using Doherty Architecture for High Efficiency and Linearity". There are only about 10 award receivers each year from universities worldwide, and this is the third time our students received this award.

Gold Award Winners of the Hong Kong Information and Communications Technology (HKICT) Awards

Mr Leung Siu Wai, our MPhil fresh graduate and Mr Li Tin Ho, our PhD student, have jointly won the Gold Award in the Best Innovation & Research (College & Undergraduate) Award category of the Hong Kong ICT Award 2007. Their supervisor is Prof Henry Chung and their winning project is "Energy Efficient Burn-in System of Switching Mode Power Supplies". In the Best Digital Entertainment (Student) Award category, our BEngIE Year-2 student Mr Li Pak Kei has won the Certificate of Merit for his project "Lightning Strike".

Best Paper Award in the National Microwave and Millimeter-wave Conference 2007

Dr. Xue Quan, our Associate Professor and his PhD student, Mr. Jianxin Chen have clutched the Best Paper Award in the National Microwave and Millimeter-wave Conference 2007 for their paper "Out-of-phase power divider based on DSPSL". The Conference is held every two years in China. This year, 560 papers have been received, among which, 460 were accepted and 6 were selected for the Best Paper Award. .

Second Prize in the IEEE Region 10 Student Paper Contest (Postgraduate Category)

Our PhD student Mr Chiu Leung, a name not unfamiliar because of his frequent award winning in different local and national contests, has received the Second Prize in the IEEE Region 10 Student Paper Contest (Postgraduate Category). His supervisor is Dr Xue Quan, and the winning paper was "Integrated Antenna Modules Achieving High Radiating Efficiency and Adaptive Beam Control for High performance RF Front End".

Mr Chen Jia Shu, our BEngECE Year 3 student supervised by Prof C H Chan, has been awarded the IEEE MTT-S Undergraduate/Pre-graduate Scholarship 2007 by the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society, USA for his project "An On-Chip Differential Active Bias Technique for RFIC Gilbert-Cell Mixer Linearization". There are only about 10 award receivers each year from universities worldwide.

Championship in IET Hong Kong Younger Members Exhibition/Conference (YMEC2007)

Our MPhil student Miss SUN Yuting, Sunnie, supervised by Dr K F Tsang, has clutched the Best of the Best Award as well as the Championship in the postgraduate section of the Institution of Engineering and Technology Hong Kong Younger Members Exhibition/Conference (YMEC2007), for her paper "QoS Prediction for High Speed Packet Access Networks".

Our PhD student Mr CHIN Ching-hong, Kevin, supervised by Dr Xue Quan, has won the 1st Runner-up for his paper "Novel Broadband Patch Antenna Using a Vertical Plate Pair as a Differential Feeding Scheme". Our BEngECE Year 3 student Mr CHEN Jia Shu, supervised by Prof C H Chan, has clutched the Championship in the undergraduate section for his paper "An On-Chip Differential Active Bias Technique for RFIC Gilbert-Cell Mixer Linearization".

EE MPhil student receives University Fellowship to study in Yale University

Our MPhil student, Mr Xueyuan SU, has passed through rigorous selections to be admitted as a full-time student in the PhD programme of the Department of Computer Science, Yale University, commencing in the 2007- 08 academic year. His supervisor is our Associate Professor, Dr Sammy C H Chan. Mr Su has also been offered a University Fellowship that will cover his tuition fee, and he will continue to pursue research in wireless ad hoc networks.

PhD student receives a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service

Mr Chengqing Li, our PhD student, has received a scholarship from the prestigious science foundation, the German Academic Exchange Service (known as DAAD, ie, Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst), to undertake post-graduate study and academic visit in Germany for six months in 2007. Mr Li's academic supervisor is our Chair Professor, Prof G. Ron Chen.

First Prize in the HK Underwater Robot Challenge 2007

A team of 6 EE students including Ke Jiangbo, Lin Jing, Tang Chengcheng, Dai Bo, Li Shuo, our BEngECE Year 1 students and Li Boyan, our BEngCE Year 1 student, supervised by the Team Instructor Dr Robin Li, has won the First Prize of the university / college group in the HK Underwater Robot Challenge 2007. The team will be sponsored to attend the ROV Challenge International Finals held in Newfoundland, Canada in late June.

Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarship

Mr. Chen Yongdong, our BEngECE Year 1 student, has recently received the Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarship. Only 3-4 scholarships will be given out annually to CityU students, and the awardees will be named Jockey Club Scholars. Mr. Chen was selected because of both his good academic performance as well as his strength on leadership.

First Prize in the IEEE Hong Kong Section 2006

Our PhD Student Mr Chiu Leung, supervised by Dr Xue Quan, has clutched the First Prize in the IEEE Hong Kong Section 2006 Student Paper Contest for his paper "An integrated antenna module achieving high radiating efficiency and adaptive beam control". Chiu Leung has been actively participating in different open competitions and has received a few honors in 2006.

Best Student Microwave Prize in the 2006 Asia-Pacific Microwave Conference

Our PhD student, Dr. Wong Hang supervised by Prof K M Luk, has won the Best Student Microwave Prize in the 2006 Asia-Pacific Microwave Conference held from 12-15 December 2006 in Yokohama, Japan, for his paper "Unidirectional Antenna Composed of a Planar Dipole and a Shorted Patch". This year, a total of 694 papers from 42 countries were accepted, which is the largest number in APMC's history held in Japan.

Best Mobile Game Award in Hong Kong ICT Awards 2006

Mr. Jack Li Pak Kei, our BEngIE Year 1 student, has won the Best Mobile Game Award in the Hong Kong ICT Awards 2006 (Digital Entertainment) for his actively involved project 3G Mopas, under the name of his company 3 Dynamics (Asia) Limited. Mr. Wallis Wong, the Founder & Business Development Director of 3 Dynamics is our 2001 BEngEE graduate.

Gold Award in Hong Kong ICT Awards 2006

Mr Wong Ka-wai and Mr Chiu Leung, our BEngECE fresh graduate and PhD student respectively, have clutched the Gold Award in the Hong Kong ICT Awards 2006: eYouth (Hardware) Award category for their joint project "Retrodirective Arrays for Mobile Communication Systems".

BEngECE Student awarded Prestigious Fulbright Science and Technology Fellowship

Mr Chen Jia Shu, our BEngECE final year student, has been awarded the prestigious Fulbright Science and Technology Fellowship award. The Award, funded by the US Department of State, is among the most prestigious U.S. international scholarships in science and technology. Mr Chen will be sponsored to pursue his PhD study in one of the top U.S. institutions such as Stanford, UC Berkeley and MIT upon graduation from CityU.

HKIE Outstanding Paper Award for Young Engineers/Researchers 2006

Mr. Chiu Leung, our PhD student supervised by Dr Xue Quan, has been awarded the HKIE Outstanding Paper Award for Young Engineers/Researchers 2006 for his paper entitled "A high efficiency circularly-polarized Van Atta analog adaptive array for full duplex communications".

Championship in IET Hong Kong Young Member Exhibition/Conference (YMEC2006)

PhD student Mr Chiu Leung, supervised by Dr Xue Quan, has won the championship in the postgraduate section for his paper "High Performance Analog Adaptive Arrays for Modern Wireless Communications" at the Institution of Engineering and Technology Hong Kong Young Member Exhibition/Conference (YMEC2006).

PhD student Mr Steven Yang, supervised by Prof K M Luk, has won the 2nd runner-up for his paper "Design of Wideband Table-shaped Reconfigurable Antennas. BEngECE fresh graduates Miss Chan Yi-wah, supervised by Prof K M Luk, has won the first runner-up for her paper "The Study of Ultra Wideband Monopole/Dielectric Resonator Antenna" while Mr Wong Ka-wai, supervised by Dr Xue Quan, has won the second runner-up, the best presentation award and the most supported award for his paper "2-Dimensional Retrodirective Array for Mobile Communication Systems".

IEEE MTT-S Undergraduate/Pre-Graduate Scholarship by the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society, USA

Mr Xiaojun (James) Chen, our BEngECE Year 3 student supervised by Prof C H Chan, has just been awarded the prestigious IEEE MTT-S Undergraduate/Pre-Graduate Scholarship by the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society, USA for his project "A new technique that improves the efficiency of a linear power amplifier. James is the only winner from the Asia Pacific area among the 10 award receivers from universities worldwide.
