Introduction

The degrees of MPhil and PhD consist of coursework and independent research studies culminating in the submission of a thesis. Research degree students will follow, under supervision, a course of study and research concurrently in an approved field for the prescribed period, during which they may not enroll in any other degree of the university or of any other comparable institutions.

Programme Requirements

A research student is required to take some taught courses, which is determined on the basis of his / her specific needs. The objectives of taught courses are to improve the candidate's research techniques and to provide them with a wider and deeper understanding of related technical areas.  The list of taught courses is available from the School of Graduate Studies.

The other important component of the research degree programmes is the submission of a thesis containing the results of the research studies in an approved area of investigation. A qualifying panel is established for each candidate by the Department. The Panel consists of the supervisor of the candidate who shall be its chairman, and two other members, one of whom is from the same Department. The panel identifies and prescribes coursework for the candidate, or recommends exemption therefrom, and assesses the results of performance in such coursework, together with the qualifying report. The qualifying report is a detailed survey of relevant literature in respect of a specific research topic, and contains information on the methodology and the expected results. The coursework requirements noted above should help in the preparation of such a report and, eventually, the thesis. Candidates will be required to submit the report within a prescribed period from the date of registration for the degree.

A MPhil thesis presents the results of a research investigation and gives evidence of a sound knowledge of the area of study, its context and applicability. A PhD thesis presents results which make a substantial original contribution to knowledge of the subject area concerned.

To be recommended for the award of an MPhil or PhD degree, a candidate must successfully complete the coursework requirements, satisfy the examiners in respect of the thesis submitted, participate in an oral examination on the thesis and area of study concerned, and in any written or practical examination or other test as required.
