Dr.
Li was born in Hong Kong and spent his primary and secondary education here. In 1977, he went to the
UK to pursue his undergraduate and postgraduate study at the City University, London. He was awarded a
B.Sc.(Hons) in mechanical engineering and an M.Sc. in systems engineering in 1980 and 1982,
respectively. He then joined the Control Engineering Centre, City University, London, as a Research
Assistant. At the same time, he pursued his Ph.D. study part-time in the hierarchical optimizing control
of large scale systems. He earned his Ph.D. degree in control engineering in 1990 from the same
University.
Dr. Li returned to Hong Kong in 1985 and joined the Department of Electronic Engineering, the City
University of Hong Kong as a Lecturer. During the first few years of his teaching career in a new
department, he was heavily involved in course planning and the development of various sub-degrees,
undergraduate and postgraduate courses offered by the Department. He specializes in control and systems
engineering, measurement and instrumentation, robotics and automation. Apart from the normal
administrative duties required of a Lecturer, he has been the B.Eng. (EE) Year Tutor, Student Induction
Officer, Departmental Liaison Officer to the ETC, Control and Drives Laboratory Manager, member of
B.Sc.EE/B.Eng.EE validation team. His current research interests include hierarchical optimizing control,
robotics and automation. He has had 10 technical publications appear in conference proceedings.
