Dr.
Pun graduated with first class honours from University College, University of
London, and was awarded a Faculty of Engineering Scholarship to study a Ph.D. at
the University of Glasgow, Scotland. His
postgraduate studies were on thin film Bragg deflection gratings for integrated
optics, and demonstrated the first realization of waveguide periodic structures
by diffusion process. After graduation, he worked at GEC Research Ltd., Hirst
Research Centre, England, and became a group leader in the Compound
Semiconductor Laboratory working on laser diodes. He then joined Thorn EMI Central Research Laboratories as a
Principal Research Engineer in the Applied Optics Department, leading a team
working on integrated optical devices. In 1988, he joined the Department of
Electronics at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. In 1992, he joined the City
University of Hong Kong and is at present a Chair Professor and Acting Dean of College of Seience and Engineering.
He
has authored or co-authored over 250 technical publications.
His recent research interests include integrated optics devices, rare
earth doped planar waveguide devices, nano-fabrication, fiber optics, and rf
photonics.
Dr
Pun is a Senior Member of the IEEE, and past Chairman of the IEEE Joint Chapter
on CAS/COM, Hong Kong, and AP/MTT/LEOS, Hong Kong.
He has served in the Technical Programme Committee of the Fourth European
Conference on Integrated Optics, and various SPIE Conferences on Optoelectronics
and Integrated Optical Circuits. He
was also a member of the Asia Pacific Liaison Committee Member of OSA Integrated
Photonics Research Conference 1998.
