Near-real-time marine environmental data from CityU Databuoys, Hoi Ha Wan

The Laboratory at Hoi Ha Wan is temporarily closed. Data is only available until 23 August. No restart date is yet available.
Owing to braodband link outage during the recent typhoons, some of the data is inconsistent and missing, especially between 28 June and 25 July.

The marine and metereological data collected at Hoi Ha Wan is made freely available to schools, universities and other interested persons for their personal/educational use. The data should not be used for decision making.

The map below indicates the various instruments and data collection devices deployed at Hoi Ha Wan over the past 5 years. The databuoys are designed to operate sensors at five depths - surface, 1m, 2m, 5m and 7m. They currently deploy temperature, salinity and light intensity instruments, but will be enhanced with dissolved oxygen and pH later.  Three buoys are currently deployed, as shown on the map - DB1, DB2 and DB3. As part of the project, we are also investigating the use of wave energy to power the buoys - see link.

On  the map DB1, DB2 and DB3 are the positions of the databuoys, C1 and C2 are where the 24/7 cameras were located, SB1 and SB2 are where the Seabird sensor arrays were located. W1 is where the weatherstation is. Cameras will soon be installed under the MLC.

The buoys are currently under beta-testing.
Data since 25 July is in a new format, where every sensor is shown. If the buoy or sensor is not connected, owing to maintenance/upgrade etc., then there will be a series of 3 zeros in the data fields. The area around the Marine Life Centre is designated area #1 to allow for future expansion of the system.
