Our Graduates
Dr TONG Kin Fai, Kenneth (1993 BEng; 1997 PhD)
Senior Lecturer
Department of Electronic and Engineering
University College London (UCL), United Kingdom

After graduating from CityU, I had worked in NiCT Japan and am now a Senior Lecturer in UCL. NiCT is a national laboratory in Japan, while UCL ranks one of the top five universities in UK. Both institutes are the places where foster many world changing technologies. My research interests cover the areas of wideband surface wave communication and medical electromagnetic. The education in CityU enables me to pursue in high quality research in such competitive and dynamic environment. The problem solving skill I learnt in my PhD leads me to understand those complex problems from their roots, so I can resolve them with simple and effective solution. The fellow PhD students and professors in the Department were supportive, the discussions and sometimes debates were inspiring and did solidify my research foundation. I had gone through my best four years in CityU.
Prof FANG Yong (1999 PhD)
Professor
School of Communication and Information Engineering
Shanghai University, China

My research interests include communication signal processing, blind signal processing, and adaptive information system. Within the PhD programme, I have picked up the skills of identifying and solving problems with critical reasoning and thoughtfully thinking from different perspectives. The above skills enable me to work innovatively and individually. Besides, I have developed my social skills in communication and presentation, which facilitates me becoming a member of networks. Furthermore, I have built my professional and personal relationships to participate into the different social circles. Therefore, based on the achievement of my PhD study, I have obtained a good position in the top-tier university.
Dr TANG Sai Chun (1997 BEng; 2000 PhD)
Assistant Professor
Radiology, Brigham and Women’s Hospital
Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA

When I was an undergraduate student, a physician humbly told me that although a medical doctor can help many patients and save a lot of lives in his/her career, the number of patients a doctor can see and help is limited because everyone has limited time. A medical researcher, on the other hand, can play an important role to help millions of patients by inventing useful medical devices, drugs, or treatment methods. I was deeply inspired by the physician and understood that advanced studies in electrical engineering would be indispensable if I wanted to dedicate my career to medical device research.
The knowledge and skills I gained in my PhD study have been substantially empowering me to develop innovative medical systems at Harvard, including a minimally-invasive high-intensity focused ultrasound system for cancer therapy, transcrainial ultrasonic methods for brain treatments, and an efficient and safe wireless power transfer method for implantable medical devices.
Dr HUANG Di (2005 PhD)
Research Scientist
National Institutes of Health, Washington DC, USA

CityU was the essential catalyst that propelled my career path, which currently involves revealing the genomic codes underlying various biomedical processes by mining massive biological data stores. Much of my work today involves contrasting the genomic data of cancer cells, potentially detecting changes associated with the formation of cancer. Building on my undergraduate engineering degree, my PhD studies at CityU where Professor Tommy Chow provided me with the skill sets of data mining and machine learning, as well as the mindset of scientific research, I continue to do my research in my interested areas.
Dr Md. Faruque Hossain (2010 PhD)
Head and Professor
Department of of Electronics & Communication Engineering
Khulna University of Engineering & Technology, Bangladesh

My research has led to both theoretical and experimental advances on several areas. Definitely, my interdisciplinary work during doctoral research at CityU has influenced me to explore and thus helped me to contribute in those different areas. My primary focus has been on the optical waveguide design, especially the polarization insensitive design considering process induced stress. My work also involved the processing of polymer materials, thin film preparation, and experimental testing of their optical and mechanical properties using a variety of nano-/micro-/macro-scale thin film characterization techniques. A natural evolution of the previous two areas of research, numerical modeling has taken a prominent importance in my research interests. I have explored such modeling work in several separate directions including process modeling, heat transfer analysis, optical design and more recent work on optofluidics. In addition, I have recently begun a research stream on modeling of hemodynamics and brain edema.
Dr YU Wenwu (2010 PhD)
Associate Dean and Professor
School of Mathematics and School of Cyberspace Security
Southeast University, Nanjing China

My research interests include multi-agent systems, complex networks and systems, nonlinear dynamics and control, smart grids, neural networks, game theory, robotics, and optimization. I held several visiting positions in Australia, China, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and the USA. I am the author or coauthor of 2 books and 100 SCI journal papers including 40 IEEE Transaction and papers in the SCI database, which have been totally cited about 9,000 times in Google Scholar. 27 papers have been included in newly (2005-2015) ESI (Essential Science Indicators) Highly Cited Papers database.
I am a recipient of the Second Prize of State Natural Science Award of China in 2016. I was listed by Thomson Reuters Highly Cited Researchers in Engineering in 2014-2016. Moreover, I was awarded a National Natural Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars in 2013, the National Ten Thousand Talent Program for Young Top-notch Talents in 2014, and the Cheung Kong Scholars Programme of China for Young Scholars in 2016.
When I was a PhD student in City University of Hong Kong, I learned not only the academics but also the passion working in the EE field which was inspired by my supervisor, Prof Guanrong Chen, and other faculty members. They are definitely a treasure in my whole life and paved a solid foundation for my future career.
Dr ZHANG Haijun (2010 PhD)
Associate Professor
Department of Computer Science and Technology
Shenzhen Graduate School, Harbin Institute of Technology

I am an Associate Professor at Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen), P. R. China. My research interests include multimedia data mining, machine learning, and computational advertising (Interested readers can find my homepage at www.dl2link.com). I received my Ph.D degree from the Department of Electronic Engineering at City University of Hong Kong in 2010. The most impressive thing remained in my mind after graduation is how to perform academic research professionally, trained by my Ph.D. advisor. When you plan to start your engineering ideas in CityU or Hong Kong, the Department of Electrical Engineering is definitely your best choice. The hardwares, softwares, and wonderful research environment will surely help you shape your mind and realize your dream.
Dr WANG Huai (2012 PhD)
Associate Professor
Department of Energy Technology
Aalborg University, Denmark

My current work is on research and teaching in the field of power electronics reliability, a multi-disciplinary area bridging the subjects of power electronics, reliability engineering, and reliability physics. The aim is to facilitate the education of next generation engineers with expertise in both power electronics and reliability engineering, and advance the scientific findings and industry innovations to provide cost-effective, efficient, and sustainable electrical energy conversion solutions.
The PhD study during 2007 to 2012 at City University of Hong Kong has laid the foundations for my professional career, in terms of scientific curiosity, critical thinking, scientific communications, and experiences in power electronics. My PhD supervisor Prof. Henry Chung has set an excellent example which has a lasting impact on my career along the years. Right after the PhD graduation, I started the work as a Postdoc at the Center of Reliable Power Electronics, Aalborg University, then an Assistant Professor, and a tenured Associate Professor in 2015.
Dr Andreas Christian Joseph (2014 PhD)
Research Economist
Bank of England

I am a Research Economist at the Bank of England (the central bank of the United Kingdom based in London), working in the Advanced Analytics Division. I mainly conduct academic research with a particular focus on large granular data sources ("Big Data") and applications of novel analytical techniques (e.g. network analysis or machine learning) to problems related to economics, financial markets and policy analysis. Apart from pure research, I also look into routine "policy work" and how it may be improved by the application of data-driven techniques. Both of these activities are very stimulating and personally rewarding. My studies at CityU helped me in preparing for this job by offering me the possibility to pursue interdisciplinary research largely aligned with my current work.
