Interdisciplinary Research on THz Science and Engineering – A Case Study

In September 2018, State Key Laboratory of Millimeter Waves (Partner Laboratory in City University of Hong Kong) was retitled to State Key Laboratory of Terahertz and Millimeter Waves (City University of Hong Kong). With the official laboratory name plaque presented to us by the Minister of Ministry of Science and Technology of China, it marked a new chapter of our SKL which was established in 2008 with Professor Kwai Man Luk, Chair Professor of Electronic Engineering, the inaugural director. At the early stage of our establishment, the advisory committee and management team already decided that terahertz (THz) research would be our future focus despite the fact that we have no space and no funding to pursue our goal. The turning point occurred around 2010 when the Innovation and Technology Commission of Hong Kong SAR Government started to provide us HKD2m per year on a reimbursement basis. The amount was later increased to HKD5m per annum and together with CityU’s staunch support, we gradually acquired some of the most advanced THz equipment up to 1.1THz for circuit and antenna measurements and time-domain spectrometer (TDS), up to 3.5THz, for material characterizations by 2013. To fabricate circuits and antennas operating at THz frequency range with wavelength less than a millimeter, we need micro- and nano-fabrication expertise from our colleagues in optoelectronics and materials science. At microwave frequencies, tunable and reconfigurable circuits and antennas can be achieved using discrete active devices which are not the case at THz. We again need the help from our materials scientists and chemists to provide us with novel and functional materials, enabling us to develop new THz devices. With the installation of pieces of expensive equipment, we looked into immediate applications in food safety, cancerous cell detection and bioimaging. Not only that we need the help of chemists but also biologists. By 2016, the composition of SKL was not purely electronic engineers but also included chemists, materials scientists and biologists. This unique combination of expertise allowed us to successfully bid for a multi-year, multi-million research grant under the Theme-Based Research Scheme of the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong. The project started in January 2017. Since then, our synergistic efforts result in advancing the-of-the-art in THz imaging, polarimetric imaging, THz antenna arrays, THz integrated circuits, 3D printings, tunable THz devices, bio-marker, etc. Interdisciplinary research is striving in the SKLTMW and is the fuel for our sustainable growth.

Co-clustering Analysis of Multidimensional Big Data

Multidimensional big datasets are being produced in many applications due to the rapid development of electronic and communications systems. Although a dataset can be very large, it may contain coherence patterns much smaller in size. For example, we may need to detect a subset of genes that co-express under a subset of conditions. In this presentation, we discuss our recently developed co-clustering algorithms for the extraction and analysis of coherent patterns in big datasets. In our method, a co-cluster, corresponding to a coherent pattern, is represented as a low-rank tensor and it can be detected from the intersection of hyperplanes in a high dimensional data space. Our method has been used successfully for DNA and protein data analysis, disease diagnosis, drug therapeutic effect assessment, and feature selection in human facial expression classification. Our technique can also be useful for many other real world data mining, image processing and pattern recognition applications.
