Prof H C So being Elected Member of National Academy of Artificial Intelligence (NAAI)
Prof H C So has been elected the Member of the National Academy of Artificial Intelligence (NAAI) 2026 in recognition of his scholarly achievements, professional leadership, and contributions to advancing artificial intelligence.
 

Prof So is recognized for his sustained contributions to signal processing and machine learning, particularly in sparse recovery, matrix completion, robust estimation, source localization, and federated learning. His recent work, featuring advances in sparsity inducing regularizers, robust low rank matrix recovery, and byzantine resilient learning under heterogeneity, has strengthened the theoretical foundations and practical reliability of AI systems.

 
The NAAI is an academic organization that brings together a distinguished community of scientists, engineers, scholars, innovators, and technology leaders from around the world dedicated to advancing artificial intelligence, scientific innovation, interdisciplinary research, and global academic collaboration.

Prof K M Luk (Chair Professor of EE) and Dr Zhao Liangliang (Postdoc) have won the Best Paper Award at 2026 Cross Strait Radio Science and Wireless Technology Conference (CSRSWTC 2026) for the paper titled “A Low-Profile and Ultrawideband Tightly Coupled Dipole Array (TCDA)”.

Dr Wang Shi Tong (Postdoc), Prof Zhu Lei (Chair Professor of Macau University), and Prof Steve Wong (Professor of EE, corresponding author), also received the Best Paper Award at the conference. The winning paper is titled “A Circuit-Free Harmonic-Absorptive Antenna Technique Based on Direct Resistive Loading”.

CSRSWTC, an international conference sponsored by IEEE, has been taking place annually in mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao since 1998. It is an extraordinary platform for idea exchange in the field of radio science and wireless communications. This year, 563 papers were accepted for presentation. The papers authored by these EE teams are two of the 6 papers being selected for the Best Paper Awards.

Prof S C Tan, Chair Professor of EE, has been selected to receive the IEEE Modeling and Control Technical Achievement Award 2026 by the IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS), for his contributions to nonlinear and robust control of power electronics systems.

The IEEE Modeling and Control Technical Achievement Award honors innovators and researchers who have made outstanding and sustained technical contributions to the advancement of power electronics in modeling and control.

This is a prestigious IEEE Power Electronics Society’s award for technical achievement in modeling and control. It is a great honor to be recognized.

Prof Ray Cheung, Associate Provost (Digital Learning), Director of the Institute of Future Learning, and Professor in EE, has been awarded a Certificate of Merit at the Fourth National Award for Excellence in Innovation. This prestigious national award recognizes his outstanding contributions to post-quantum cryptography, science communication, and community service.

The National Award for Excellence in Innovation is jointly organized by the China Association for Science and Technology, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, and the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council. Conferred on a triennial basis, this award recognizes professionals and organizations that have made exceptional contributions in fundamental research, frontier exploration, major equipment and engineering projects, transformation of research outcomes, innovation and entrepreneurship, and social services.

Widely recognized as a top honor in the industry, only 229 scientists and technologists nationwide have been selected for this award. This achievement underscores Prof Cheung’s outstanding academic accomplishments and his significant impact on the field.

Prof Chaoliang Tan (Associate Professor) has been awarded GCIM Early Career Award 2026 presented by Materials Research Society of Korea at the 4th Global Conference of Innovation Materials (GCIM), in recognition of his exceptional research making a significant impact and advancement in the field of materials research.

GCIM serves as an international platform for showcasing cutting-edge research and fostering global collaboration in materials science and technology. This year, it features 16 symposia spanning a wide range of topics, including advanced electronics and semiconductors, energy materials and conversion technologies, biomedical and biointegrated materials, computational and structural materials, and materials for environmental sustainability.

Prof Ray Cheung Winning CENG Outstanding Teaching Awards 2025-26

Prof Ray Cheung, Associate Provost (Digital Learning), Director of the Institute of Future Learning, and Professor of EE, has been awarded the Outstanding Teaching Award (OTA) 2025–26 by the College of Engineering (CENG), in recognition of his exceptional contributions to student learning and his dedication to promoting excellence in teaching.

Prof Cheung is deeply committed to fostering an innovative, interactive, and student-centered learning environment. By integrating team-based learning with digital and collaborative approaches, he empowers students to take an active role in their own learning journey. This marks the second time Prof Cheung has received this prestigious award, a testament to his sustained excellence in teaching.

Since its establishment in 2019/20, the CENG OTA has been awarded to only a select number of faculty members, with five recipients from EE to date. This recognition highlights the strong commitment within our Department to teaching excellence. We will continue to strive for further achievements in both teaching and research in the years ahead.

Prof Din-ping Tsai Winning 2026 Top Ten Advances in Metamaterials in China (Basic Research)

Prof Din-ping Tsai (Chair Professor of EE), in collaboration with Prof. Shengxian Shi from the Shanghai Jiaotong University, has been awarded the 2026 Top Ten Advances in Metamaterials in China (Basic Research) for their recent work published in Nature Communications (Link: https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-025-65171-7) and titled “Dispersive Meta-lens Thermometry for High-temperature Measurements”.

The award was presented at the 5th China Metamaterials Conference (CMMC 2026). The conference is dedicated to advancing theoretical research, design and fabrication, and device applications of metamaterials in China. It also aims to strengthen academic exchange, technical communication, and application promotion between academia and industry, thereby fostering knowledge innovation, technological innovation, and application development in the field of metamaterials.

Prof Derrick Jiang (Associate Professor), Dr Ben Zhang (Postdoc), Dr Zhou Jiayu (Postdoc), Mr Zhu Zhaozheng (PhD student), and scholars from Hefei University of Technology, Nanjing Institute of Technology, Harbin Engineering University, and Southeast University has won the Best Paper Award at the 2026 IEEE 9th International Electrical and Energy Conference (CIEEC 2026). The winning paper is titled “A Node-Level Pulse Density Modulation-Based Control for Wireless Power Transfer in Networked AUV Energy Supply Systems”.

CIEEC provides a technical exchange platform for the academic and engineering communities in the field of electricity and energy. The Best Paper Award is presented to papers demonstrating outstanding originality, technical contribution, and potential impact in the field.
