Student Award 2023

A team of PhD students and Postdoc comprising Mr CHEN Chen, Mr MA Tianlu, Dr MO Liping, Mr WANG Xiaosheng, and Mr WANG Yibo, has been awarded the 1st Runner Up and Best Innovation Award in IET Young Professionals Exhibition & Competition (YPEC) 2023 – Postgraduate Section. The winning project, supervised by Prof Derrick Jiang, is called "High Power Capability and High Power Density Wireless Charging using Nanocrystalline Ribbon Materials".
YPEC, organized by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), is a dynamic platform for young professionals from different segments to exhibit their engineering and technology innovation.

PhD student, Mr GAO Shuai, supervised by Prof Steve Wong, has won the Outstanding Paper Award at 18th Chinese National Symposium on Radio Propagation for the paper titled “A dual-band high-gain shared-aperture antenna”.
The event, organized by the Chinese Institute of Electronics, attracted 451 papers for submission and 10 were selected to receive the awards.
PhD student, Mr SHANG Jiayu, under the supervision of Prof Yanni Sun, has won the Champion at Postgraduate Student Research Paper Competition 2022 – 2023 organized by IEEE (Hong Kong) Computational Intelligence Chapter for the paper titled “CHERRY: A Computational Method for Accurate Prediction of Virus–prokaryotic Interactions Using a Graph Encoder–decoder Model”.
The competition aims to promote computational intelligence among students in Hong Kong. Topics of interest include but are not limited to AI and machine learning, intelligent risk management, financial engineering, simulation process, pattern and speech recognition, intelligent systems, data mining, fuzzy systems, neural networks, evolutionary computation, robotics, and generative models.

Three PhD students, Mr MAO Gaoyu, Mr LI Guangyan, and Ms ZHANG Zhewen, have won the First Prize in the 2023 Cross-Strait and Hong Kong-Macao College Students Integrated Circuit and Electronic Design Invitational Competition for the project titled “RISC-V Based Lightweight Public-key Cryptosystem Design and Applications" which is supervised by Prof Ray Cheung (Professor, EE) and Dr Yao Liu (2019 EE PhD graduate and now Assistant Professor at Sun Yat-sen University).
The competition was organized by the Chinese Institute of Electronics (CIE) and hosted by the Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) with the theme of "chip" creating the future (“芯”創未來). The competition attracted hundreds of teams from the Mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau to participate. Our EE team is the only team in Hong Kong shortlisted for the Special Prize defense and won the First Prize.

Mr YANG Ye, PhD student, under the supervision of Prof W S Chan, has won the Best Student Paper Award – Third Prize under the category “Antennas and Microwave Technologies” at Photonics & Electromagnetics Research Symposium (PIERS) 2023 for the paper titled “A Wideband and Compact 3 × 3 Nolen Matrix with Flat Phase Differences”.
PIERS provides an international forum for reporting progress and recent advances in the modern development of electromagnetics, photonics and exciting applications. Best Student Paper Award is established to encourage more students to present their good research results in the subject area.

CityU Underwater Robotics Team has ranked the fourth at 2023 MATE ROV World Championship held on 20 – 24 June 2023 at St Vrain Valley School District, Longmont, Colorado, US. The CityU team has participated in this competition since 2016 and the result achieved this year is the best ever. There were 23 teams from all over the world advancing to the world final to compete in the EXPLORE class.
The team, comprising 7 EE students and 2 students from the Department of Computer Science and School of Data Science, is supervised by Prof Ray Cheung (Professor, EE) and Prof Pakpong Chirarattananon (Associate Professor, BME).

The EXPLORER class is at an advanced level for universities, colleges and high schools that have previously participated in the competition. Participants are required to perform as entrepreneurs that manufacture, market, and sell products. In addition to engineering their remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), participants have to deliver technical reports, poster displays, and engineering presentations to professionals who are judges of the competition. Teams also have to perform a product demonstration to show how their ROVs work as presented.
