Programme Structure

The research degrees of MPhil and PhD consist of both coursework and independent research studies culminating in the submission of a thesis.

Qualifying Examination (for PhD only):

Students commencing studies from September 2019 onwards must pass a Qualifying Examination (QE) with the maximum number of attempts and timeline determined in accordance with the regulations and guidelines set by the SGS. Such regulations and guidelines are accessible via the Student Guidebook disseminated by SGS.

Thesis

An MPhil thesis should present the results of research investigation, give evidence of a sound understanding of the area of study, its context and applicability, and make a contribution to knowledge. A PhD thesis, in addition to the above, should make a substantial original contribution to knowledge in the subject area concerned, which is of good quality publishable in respectable journals of the subject area. The theses from previous year are available in CityU Scholar.

To be recommended for the award of an MPhil or PhD degree, a student must successfully complete the coursework requirements, satisfy the examiners in respect of the thesis submitted, participate in an oral examination on the thesis and area of study concerned, and in any written or practical examinations as required. Also, students are requested to give an exit presentation on their research work in the seminars organized by the department before their submission of thesis.
