PhD Student Winning Student Presentation Award at 2025 International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation

Mr ZHANG Yuxin won the Student Presentation Award at International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation (ISAP2025). The paper supervised by Prof Steve Wong and co-authored with Prof CHENG Qingsha from Southern University of Science and Technology is titled “A Wideband Millimeter-Wave HDI-Based Antenna-in-Package Design and Its GSG-Probe-Free Measurement”.

ISAP2025 organized by Communications Society of the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communications Engineers (IEICE) aims to provide an international forum for the exchange of information on the progress of research and development in antennas, propagation, electromagnetic wave theory.

Mr TO Yat Sing, supervised by Prof Steve Wong, won the IEEE AP-S Industrial Engineering Paper Award on Antenna Measurements and Applications at IEEE International Conference on Antenna Measurements and Applications (CAMA 2025) for the paper titled “Terahertz Dual-Polarized Phase-Change Material-Based Metasurface with Independently Controllable Dual Beam”.

CAMA sponsored by IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society is an international forum for the exchange of information on state-of-the-art research on antenna measurements and applications.

Mr SUN Wenjian, supervised by Prof Steve Wong, was awarded the Best Paper Award at the Cross Strait Radio Science and Wireless Technology Conference (CSRSWTC 2025) for the paper titled “Mode-Diverse Wave-in-Substrate Antenna for Coexisting Travelling and Standing Waves”.

CSRSWTC organized by IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society since 1998 is an extraordinary platform for idea exchanging in the field of radio science and wireless communications.

The team, supervised by Prof Derrick Jiang and comprising Mr Chen Chen (PhD), Dr Tianlu Ma (Postdoc), and Dr Ben Zhang (Postdoc), has won the Third Place at IEEE PELS Drs. Muhammad Harunur and Fatema Rashid Student Program Hardware Project Demonstrations at the IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE) 2025. The winning project is titled “Efficient and Lightweight Wireless Energy Harvesting System for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle”.

ECCE brings together practicing engineers, researchers, and professionals for interactive and multidisciplinary discussions on the latest advances in various areas related to energy conversion. Since 2011, ECCE has organized the hardware demo event for students to showcase their research outcomes and interact with academia and industry. There were 19 international teams selected for the final demonstration, and our team is one of the three award winners.

Miss LIN Rong, supervised by Prof Din-ping Tsai (Chair Professor of EE), has been awarded Outstanding Student Report Awards at the 5th International Conference on Computational Imaging (CITA) and International Symposium on 3D Visual Perception and Application (IS3DVPA) 2025. The winning report is titled “Integrated-resonant meta-devices for wavefront manipulation”.

HackTheSilicon is the premier hardware security contest where computer scientists and industry experts explore security vulnerabilities in system-on-a-chip (SoC) designs. It aims to train hardware security experts, design and develop advanced methodologies and automated tools for detecting hardware security vulnerabilities, and aid community testing and open sourcing.

Winning First Prize at 2025 Tencent Cloud EdgeOne Global Game Hackathon

Mr CHAN Sing Yeung (CDE Year-3), teaming with students from Southeast University and Shanghai Jiaotong University, has won the First Prize at 2025 Tencent Cloud EdgeOne Global Game Hackathon. The winning team is supervised by Prof Ray Cheung (Associate Provost (Digital Learning) and EE Professor), Prof Haoliang Li (Assistant Professor of EE), and Prof Shiqi Wang (Professor of CS).

The theme of the competition is "SplitSecond Spark” - creating web games that focus on instant reactions, quick decisions, and explosive moments. Participating teams were provided with the Tencent Cloud EdgeOne all-in-one development platform to bring ideas to life.

The CityUHK Underwater Robotics Team won two awards at two underwater robotics competitions. The excellent team was awarded the Second Class Award at China International Ocean Underwater Robot Competition (CIOURC) 2025 held in Qingdao and Second Runner-up at the 20th IET/MATE Hong Kong Regional of the MATE ROV Competition.

Mr ZHU Zhaozheng (PhD) has won the Best Presentation Award at 2025 International Conference on Applied Electrical Engineering and Technology (AEET 2025). The award-winning paper, supervised by Prof Derrick Jiang (Associate Professor of EE), is titled “Synchronization of Bidirectional Wireless Power Transfer System: A Novel Method and Comparative Study on Compensation Topologies”.

Mr WEI Zhengqi (PhD), Dr CHENG Chun Sing (PhD graduate 2022), and Mr LIU Chun For (MPhil graduate 2022) have won the Gold Medal and Best Sustainable Invention of the Year at the WorldInvent Singapore (WoSG) 2025. The winning project, supervised by Prof Henry Chung (Chair Professor) and Prof Ricky Lau (Retired EE faculty member), is titled “Efficient Energy Recycling for Energy Routing, Redistribution, and Health Monitoring of Batteries in Large-Scale Energy Storage Systems.”

WoSG is a premier platform for showcasing innovative solutions to pressing global challenges, for building synergies and collaboration between nations, and serving as a bridge to learn from other nations, fellow innovators, and professionals.
