Department of Electrical Engineering (Bachelor of Engineering)

Major Options and Majors Allocation

A. Major Options

EE offers four majors. They are:

  1. Computer and Data Engineering (CDE)
  2. Electronic and Electrical Engineering (ELEL)
  3. Information Engineering (INFE)
  4. Microelectronics Engineering (MEE)

B. Majors Allocation

After the end of Semester B, the top 40% of students who meet the University, College and Department specified requirements will be allocated their first choice major under the Department of Electrical Engineering, irrespective of the intake plan number for individual majors (please note that once a major is allocated, no further changes to the choice of majors can be made). The other 60% of students will be allocated a major of their choice, subject to the availability of places and the selection criteria set by individual majors.

Top 40% Majors Allocation
Selection based on:

  1. Cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of Semester B in the first year of study;
  2. No failed grades in any courses in Semester A and B; and
  3. Completion of at least 30(Note 1 & 2)  credit units in Semester A and B, including the number of credit units earned from College Requirements, College-specified GE courses and courses as required by the Department.

Remaining 60% Majors Allocation
Selection based on:

  1. Cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of Semester B in the first year of study;
  2. Student’s choice of priority
  3. Availability of places for individual majors
  4. Selection criteria set by individual majors

Note 1: For students who have been granted course exemption (and/or credit transfer), in any required courses that are specified by the College/School/Department, they are still required to complete courses of at least 30 credit units in Semesters A and B 2024/25 to be eligible for Phase One majors allocation exercise.

Note 2: Credits earned from “LC0200A English for Academic Purposes 1”, “LC0200B English for Academic Purposes 2”, and “CHIN1001 University Chinese I” taken in Semesters A and B 2024/25 can be counted towards the 30 credit unit requirement for the Phase One majors allocation exercise. However, grades obtained from the above courses will not be included in the GPA calculation.

Note 3: Students who are on leave of absence in either Semester A or Semester B 2024/25 will still be included in the Phase Two allocation of the majors allocation exercise.

Note 4: Students who are on leave of absence in BOTH Semester A and Semester B 2024/25 will participate in future majors allocation exercise subject to the selection criteria for that particular round.
