The donation scheme underpinning the CityUHK EE Enterprise Innovation Hub represents a strategic funding methodology critical for the sustainability and impact of the research labs. Each enterprise lab within the Hub requires a minimum annual donation of HKD 1 million. This contribution is essential to fund research activities and provide financial support for approximately four self-financed PhD postgraduate students supervised by faculty members. The lab size, averaging 500 square feet, situates it ideally for a research team of 3-8 members.
Donors entering the scheme are encouraged to commit for at least two years. This multi-year commitment ensures continuity and depth in research projects, permitting adequate time for meaningful outcomes and innovation maturation aligned with donors’ industrial interests. The minimum financial threshold and commitment duration also enable stable operational funding for the labs, from securing personnel to acquiring specialized equipment and supporting research dissemination.
In appreciation of the donor’s support, CityUHK grants naming rights to the Enterprise Lab during the tenure of the donation. This naming acknowledgment not only honors the donor’s contribution but also enhances their brand visibility within the academic and industrial innovation community.
Beyond the immediate financial input, donors are encouraged to engage actively with the research teams. This includes sharing market insights, identifying unmet industrial challenges, offering resources and background IP, and co-creating contractual or joint research endeavors. The collaboration may further extend to grant applications, particularly the Innovation and Technology Fund (ITF), to leverage additional governmental support. Additionally, donors have the prospect of benefiting from the commercialization of licensed IP generated from the research, creating a mutually beneficial cycle of innovation and enterprise growth.
This structured donation scheme offers a clear pathway for enterprises to invest strategically in research talent and technological development, underpinning CityUHK's ambition to accelerate research impact while fostering sustainable industry partnerships.
