Our PhD students and graduates have won the Antenna and Propagation Student Paper Award and Microwave Theory and Techniques Student Paper Award in the 21st IEEE (HK) AP/MTT Postgraduate Conference which was held virtually on 21 November 2020.

The conference is jointly organized by IEEE Hong Kong Section AP/MTT Joint Chapter, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) and The Chinese University of Hong Kong. The main purpose is to enhance the communications among the postgraduate students in the region and to provide a platform for ideas exchange on the current research focus of the related fields.

The Hong Kong Science and Technology Park (HKSTP) InnoAcademy develops forward-looking learning and training programmes to upskill talents for innovation and technology (I&T) careers in Hong Kong. Two of our graduates, Mr Law Chun Kit (2020 ECE graduate) and Dr Leung Ho Chun (2020 PhD graduate supervised by Prof Andrew Leung and 2015 INFE graduate), are selected to join its inaugural Technology Leaders of Tomorrow (TLT) Programme. There were over 600 applicants from the 2020 world’s top 50 universities. Mr Law and Dr Leung are two of the eight selected talents to join the first cohort of the programme.
Participants of TLT programme will first enter a two-month HKSTP internship and they will assume a 24-month full-time R&D role at one of HKSTP’s partner companies. For more information on InnoAcademy and the TLT programme, please visit https://innoacademy.hkstp.org/.

Miss Lam Wing Yan (INFE 2020 graduate), has been awarded the First Prize (一等獎) and Best Innovation Award (創新獎) in Pan-Pearl River Delta Region IT Project Competition 2020. The winning project, supervised by Dr Yixuan Yuan, is titled “Sign Language Translator with Deep Learning”.
The Competition, organized by the Guangdong Province Federation of Computers and Internet Professional Association (iProA), aims to recognize the academic achievements of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) projects in the Pan-PRD region, including Zhejing, Fujian, Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Sichuan, Guizhou and Yunnan in China, Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR and Taiwan. The winning project is one of the four outstanding projects short-listed to represent Hong Kong in the final round of the Competition.
Mr YAN Boxun and Mr CHENG Feng (ECE Year-3 students), who teamed up with a student from Department of Mathematics, have won the Second Prize in Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling (CUMCM) 2020. The winning project, supervised by Dr HU Xianpeng from Department of Mathematics, is titled "Furnace Temperature Curve Analysis and Optimization".
CUMCM has been held annually since 1992 which aims to improve the understanding of mathematics among university students, especially mathematical modeling and mathematical software. Participating teams have to develop mathematical and/or computer models to solve a simplified real-word problem in engineering, management, etc. in three days.
Mr Zheng Shaomian (MScMIT), has won the Second Prize in Zhejiang Lab Cup Global AI Competition-Video Generation Challenge 2020. The winning project, supervised by Dr Yanni Sun, is titled "Quadratic Video Interpolation Based on Multiple Discontinuous Frames".
The challenge was launched in 2018 which aims to promote AI research and boost the AI industry. There were 327 teams joined the contest and the top 12 were shortlisted for entering the final. Mr Zheng is one of the 6 awardees and awarded RMB100,000 and a certificate.
Mr ZHANG Yiqing (MScEIE and CDE graduate 2020) has won the 12th China Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award (第十二屆中國青少年科技創新獎)*. The winning project, supervised by Dr Ray Cheung and Dr Alan Lam, is titled "Smart Baseball Training System".
The award has been established to encourage innovation and technological invention among youngsters. This year, there are 91 awardees from different provinces of China and Mr Zhang is one of the two awardees coming from Hong Kong.

Mr WANG Hao and Ms WEI Yang (PhD student) have been awarded the 2nd Runner Up in IET Young Professionals Exhibition & Competition (YPEC) 2020 – Postgraduate Section. The winning project, supervised by Dr K F Tsang, is titled " A Novel COVID-19 Quarantine Directive: Optimized Dynamic Geofencing ".
YPEC, organized by Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), is a dynamic platform for young professionals from different segments to exhibit their engineering and technology innovation. The theme this year is “PIENGINEER” which aims at inspiring young professionals to become a “Pioneer” and “Engineer” in different aspects and unleash their innovative ideas.
PhD students, Mr AGADAGBA Stephen Kugbere and Mr ELDALY Abdelrahman Bakr Mohammed Abdelnaby, have won the Second Prize in the IEEE EMB Hong Kong-Macau Joint Chapter Student Paper Competition 2020. The winning paper, supervised by Dr Leanne Chan, is titled "Electrical Stimulation Enhances and Maintains Theta-Gamma Modulation in Retinal Degeneration Mice".
IEEE EMB Hong Kong-Macau Joint Chapter Student Paper Competition is held annually which aims to encourage postgraduate students from all tertiary institutions in Hong Kong, Macau, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhongshan to present their project works in biomedical engineering related topics.
Miss RUAN Yuyan (CDE, 2019 entering major) has recently won the IET Prize 2020, which was organized by The Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET).
IET's vision is to inspire, inform and influence the global engineering community, and to support technology innovation to meet the needs of society. The IET Prizes were set up to recognize excellent students who have achieved excellence at selected programmes that falls within the IET's scope of interest. Being the top student in CDE (CGPA 4.0 and being placed on Dean's List for 4 consecutive semesters) and actively participated in numerous co-/ extra-curricular activities organized by the Department, the College, Student Development Services and the Student Residence Office, Miss Ruan was nominated to compete for the prizes.
Mr LAU Chi Ho (PhD) and Mr YIM Kwok Woon (CDE, Yr-4), who teamed up with students from Department of Biomedical Science, School of Data Science and Department of Finance, have won the Best Fintech Award in International Blockchain Olympiad (IBCOL) 2020. The winning team, supervised by Dr Ray Cheung and Dr Alan Yeung, developed a project which aims to nurtures the existing microcredit industry by utilizing indigenous machine learning algorithms and the disruptive attribute of blockchain that bring the highest standards of evaluation, transparency, and cost-efficiency.
IBCOL 2020 attracted 60 teams from 15 different countries to join the international round. It embodies the characteristics of a business case competition, an academic whitepaper conference, and a "hackathon". Contestants of up to six students first write a whitepaper to describe a complete solution, and finalists are required to create a poster board and a pitch presentation. This competition rewards students who can think deeply about a problem and the solution, and explain it to others in a coherent manner.
