CityU EE Collaborates with Six Globally-renowned Enterprises to Establish the Sixth Joint Laboratory, Jointly Cultivating Global Innovative Technology Talents

City University of Hong Kong (CityU) - Department of Electrical Engineering (EE) established the CityU Electrical Joint Laboratory with six well-known technology enterprises, including Alibaba Cloud, Deloitte, Fujikon, HKT, iOS Club and Mobicon on March 23, 2023, to jointly promote scientific research and knowledge technology transfer, and cultivate global technology talents.

Dr. Albert Sung, Associate Head of Department of Electrical Engineering, CityU, said: "We are very pleased to cooperate with so many leading industry organizations to jointly promote the development of innovative science and technology in Hong Kong. The project has entered the sixth phase, which is a new milestone in jointly cultivating global technology talents. This programme helps to train students and promote industrial cooperation through innovative research projects. The developed technologies will be commercialized and transferred to industry partners and government departments to contribute to local and even global industries."

The CityU EE Joint Lab programme has been established since 2019, together with the newly joint partners in phase 6, the number of participating institutions in the program has increased to 34. A series of cooperative and technical projects have been/will be launched with these partners.

Sixth Joint Laboratory

CityU EE Established New Joint Laboratory with another Six World-renowned Enterprises to Develop an Innovation and Technology Ecosystem in Hong Kong

City University of Hong Kong (CityU) - Department of Electrical Engineering (EE) and six world-renowned technology companies, including Cyberport, FUJIFILM Business Innovation Hong Kong, Gravity Capital Partners, Hong Kong Science and Technology Park (HKSTP), Logistics and Supply Chain MultiTech R&D Centre (LSCM), and NVIDIA Hong Kong Artificial Intelligence Laboratory announced the establishment of the City University EE Joint Laboratory on 18 November 2021 to jointly promote scientific research and the transfer of knowledge and technology, and build the Hong Kong innovation and technology ecosystem.

Professor Christian Wagner, Provost and Chair Professor of Social Media, was delighted to witness the commencement of phase five of the joint laboratory programme and mentioned that "The EE department at CityU is merely one component in this partnership. The strength of the network arises from the excellent joint research and innovation activities with the now 28 partner organisations. Networks are strong, resilient, and create exponential benefits for their participants. This is the essence of success of the CityU EE Joint Lab."

Since its establishment in 2019, the CityU EE Joint Lab Programme has connected with a total of 28 CityU EE Joint Lab Partners. A series of cooperative and technical projects have been/will be launched with these partners. For example, Compass Technology has arranged a student internship programme and has invited university professors to discuss research projects. Intel Co., Ltd. has arranged FPGA online training for CityU EE students. Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) and Joint Universities Computer Centre held an artificial intelligence lecture and invited university students to participate. Pong Yuen Group has donated NVIDIA JETSON Nano computing platforms for organizing artificial intelligence training classes to allow undergraduates and graduate students to participate in AI learning. United Microelectronics Center (Hong Kong) arranged lectures with professors from EE and deepened the joint research with CityU.

CityU EE Established New Joint Research Laboratory with Six World-renowned Enterprises to Further Strengthen the Commercialization of Innovative Technology

City University of Hong Kong (CityU) - Department of Electrical Engineering (EE) and six world-renowned technology companies, including Compass Technology Company Limited, Intel Corporation, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Pong Yuen Group, Provista Group, and United Microelectronics Center (Hong Kong) announced the establishment of the City University EE Joint Laboratory on 3 June 2021 to jointly promote scientific research and transfer of knowledge and technology, and strengthen the development of Hong Kong's innovation and technology.

Professor Michael Tse, Associate Vice-President (Strategic Research) and Chair Professor of Electrical Engineering was very pleased to witness the commencement of phase four of the joint laboratory programme and expected that the plan will develop more innovative technologies, in line with the trend of high-tech marketization, to promote University students to join global technological entrepreneurship and benefit our society.

Since its establishment in 2019, the CityU EE Joint Lab Programme has connected with a total of 22 CityU EE Joint Lab Partners. A series of cooperative and technical projects have been/will be launched with these partners. For example, ASM Pacific is now carrying out new research projects with EE Faculty. Gold Peak Group has arranged research projects and on-site visits to the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park and the Central KEF Advanced Audio Experience Center, and gave a training program to EE students. Microsoft Hong Kong and Macau arranged training programs for hundreds of EE students with relevant global certifications. SmarTone Group has set up a new 5G laboratory at CityU to enhance the research work of related Faculty and graduate students. SUGA International Group Co., Ltd. arranged a research project in high-performance and low-power hardware design with artificial intelligence for pets. Many more exciting collaborations are expected as we continue to work closely with our CityU EE Joint Lab partners.

CityU Joint Lab with six world-renowned enterprises to promote innovative technology

City University of Hong Kong (CityU) - Department of Electrical Engineering (EE) and six world-renowned technology companies, including ASM Pacific Technology Limited, Gold Peak Industries (Holdings) Limited, Microsoft Hong Kong Limited, Sino Group, SmarTone Telecommunications (Holdings) Limited, and SUGA International (Holdings) Limited, announced the establishment of the CityU EE Joint Lab on 14 January 2021. All six partners shared their experience and expectations about this scheme. Over 120 industrialists and academic faculty members joined this ceremony via zoom. These partnerships mark the cooperation in promoting research and knowledge/technology transfer to steer the development of innovative technology in Hong Kong.

President Way Kuo was delighted to witness the commencement of phase three of the joint laboratory project and hoped this will contribute to more innovative technologies in the future and help promote technology transfer and commercialisation to benefit our community.

Since its establishment in 2019, the CityU EE Joint Lab Programme has connected with a total of 16 CityU EE Joint Lab Partners. A series of cooperative and technical projects have been/will be launched with these partners.

Five Additional CityU EE Joint Laboratories to Drive Research and Commercialisation

City University of Hong Kong (CityU) - Department of Electrical Engineering (EE) and five technology organizations including Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. (Huawei), Microchip Technology Inc. (Microchip), Sengital Limited (Sengital), Shenzhen Corerain Technologies Co., Limited (Corerain), and Xilinx Inc. (Xilinx) established the 2nd phase of CityU EE Joint Labs on 17 September 2020 through an online platform. About 100 industrialists and academic faculty members joined this online ceremony.

Through this CityU EE Joint Lab Scheme, the University-Industry collaboration is strengthened. COO of Sengital, Mr Joe Wong, indicated in the ceremony “We sponsored one ITF project of CityU EE faculty member last year and committed to 2 more sponsorship for ITF projects this year. On the other hand, to incubate young talents, we reserved budget of HKD1M this year for CityU EE students to support 6 one-year placement positions including their final year projects!”

CityU EE Joint Lab is a “Government-Industry-Academic-Research Centre” scheme for collaboration between EE Department and industrial associations, research centres, corporates and organizations, aims to empower recruitment, research collaboration, commercialisation, and technology transfer.

EE and Five Technology Organizations Establish Joint Laboratories to Drive Research and Commercialisation

City University of Hong Kong (CityU) - Department of Electrical Engineering (EE) and five technology organizations including Automotive Platforms and Application Systems R&D Centre (APAS), Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD), Hong Kong Applied Science And Technology Research Institute Company Limited (ASTRI), Hong Kong Electronic Industries Association (HKEIA), and Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) announced the establishment of five CityU EE Joint Labs on 19 September 2019.

CityU EE Joint Lab is a “Government-Industry-Academic-Research Centre” scheme for collaboration between EE Department and industrial associations, research centres, corporates and organisations. This scheme includes physical lab logo wall setup in the EE Department; an online platform linked up with the EE Department website to share the progress of collaboration and projects; a series of regular networking events for industrialists, faculty members, and students, etc.. The Joint Lab aims to empower recruitment, research collaboration, commercialisation, and technology transfer.
