Applied Electromagnetics Laboratory

The laboratory mainly supports the research team of Applied Electromagnetics. The laboratory along with the State Key Laboratory of Terahertz and Millimeter Waves is well equipped with facilities for antenna design, terahertz device characterizations, terahertz and millimeter-wave radiation, microwave measurement, and microwave integrated circuits (MMIC). Our USD 10 million-worth facilities not only support internal research and development activities, but also provide measurement services to external customers. Our major equipment includes:

  • Near-field antenna test chambers cover frequency bands from 700 MHz to 67 GHz,
  • Compact range antenna measurement facility supports frequencies from 1 GHz to 50 GHz,
  • Satimo complex antenna system for measuring a complete set of parameters of an antenna within bands from 800 MHz to 18 GHz,
  • Millimeter-wave radiation measurement platform up to 110 GHz,
  • Millimeter-wave robotic antenna measurement system up to 110 GHz,
  • Terahertz antenna measurement system up to 1 THz,
  • Terahertz measurement facility up to 20 THz in time domain,
  • Load-pull system of up to 50 GHz and a probe station equipped with up to 1.1 THz probes, and
  • Most of our microwave apparatus, including network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, and signal generators, high-frequency modules cover up to 1.1 THz.
  • Dual Robotic Arm Measurement Platform up to 500 GHz.


Optoelectronics, Electronics, Power, Nanotechnology, and Biosystems Laboratory

The laboratory mainly supports the research team of Optoelectronics, Electronics, Power, Nanotechnology, and Biosystems. The laboratory hosts state-of-the-art equipment for advanced micro-/nano-processing of photonic devices, optical sensors, biomedical research, and so on. It supports also the activities of the Centre for Biosystems, Neuroscience, and Nanotechnology. The laboratory provides excellent support for running and maintaining the cleanroom in training new users. Our major equipment includes the following with details listed here:

  • Electron-beam lithography down to 10-nm linewidth,
  • Mask aligner with resolution down to 0.8 µm and light intensity uniformity <2% over 4” diameter area,
  • Reactive ion etching system with 6 process gas lines and for wafer size up to 12 inches,
  • Inductively coupled plasma etching system with 5% uniformity over 150 mm substrate,
  • RF magnetron and DC sputtering system for metal and dielectric film deposition,
  • Thermal evaporation systems for multilayer deposition,
  • Electron beam evaporation system with 4 pocket crucible sources for substrate up to 4 inches,
  • Tabletop scanning electron microscope with magnification up to 100,000X, equipped with 3 accelerating voltage mode, secondary electron and backscattered electron detectors,
  • Atomic force microscope with self-detection and optical lever modes,
  • Step profiler for measuring vertical features up to 1200 µm, with motorized stage and low stylus force from 0.03 to 15 mg,
  • Photoluminescence system covering 185 nm to 5500 nm, and
  • Argon laser, excimer laser, and other lasers covering different wavelengths, from ultraviolet to infrared.

Computer and Signal Processing Laboratory

The laboratory mainly supports the research team of Computer Engineering and Control Systems . The laboratory supports high-end computation for signal and image processing and biomedical data analysis. It facilitates a number of R&D projects on audio and speech signal processing, signal detection, source localization, computational neuroscience, biomedical sensors and devices, computer vision and pattern recognition, medical image analysis, 3D video systems, mobile based entertainment and health monitoring systems, as well as bioinformatics and computational biology. Our major equipment includes:

  • Dell PowerEdge R730 Server: Intel Xeon Silver 4114 CPU, 64 GB RAM, 32 TB SAS Disk RAID Storage,
  • Dell PowerEdge R910 Server: Intel Xeon E7-8837 CPU*4, 256 GB RAM, 10 TB SAS Disk RAID Storage,
  • HP ProLiant ML 350P Gen 8 Server: Intel Xeon E5-2690 CPU*2, 128 GB RAM, TESLA K40 GPU Cards,
  • DELL Precision 7920 Workstation: Intel Xeon Silver 4116 CPU*2, 128GB RAM, NVIDIA RTX 2080Ti GPU Cards, 
  • DELL Precision 5820 Workstation: Intel i9-10900X CPU, 64GB RAM, NVIDIA RTX 2080Ti GPU Cards, and
  • Dell Precision T7500 Workstation: Intel Xeon X5690 CPU*2, 96 GB RAM, NVIDIA GTX 1080 and TESLA  C2075 GPU Cards.

Control and Digital Communications Laboratory

The laboratory mainly supports the research teams of Computer Engineering and Control Systems and Wireless Communications, and the activities of the Center for Chaos and Complex Networks. The laboratory provides services to design dedicated hardware platforms to support a range of research including machine learning, automatic control, complex networks, digital and mobile communications, intelligent system, optimization, nonlinear systems, and circuits design.


Networking and Communications Laboratory

The laboratory mainly supports teaching and research in Networking and Wireless Communications. The research areas supported in the laboratory include survivable network design, network performance evaluation and control, vehicle-to-grid, named data networking, data completion, video copy detection using content based fingerprinting, green cellular networks, 5G mobile networks, and advanced statistical signal processing. Our major equipment includes routers, switches, as well as some general computing equipment.
