Prof Ron Chen on Highly Cited Researchers List 2018

Prof Ron Chen has been put on the Highly Cited Researcher List 2018 for the field “Engineering” once again, the 5th consecutive year being put on the list. He has also been put on the list of other fields for different years.

Engineering – 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2001
Mathematics – 2017, 2016, 2015
Physics - 2014

Highly Cited Researchers from Clarivate Analytics is an annual list recognizing leading researchers in the sciences and social sciences from around the world. Scholars who are named Highly Cited Researchers write the greatest numbers of reports officially designated by Essential Science Indicators as Highly Cited Papers, those rank in the top 1% by citations for field and publication year during 2006-2016 in the Web of Science.

IEEE PELS Best ECCE Paper on Emerging Technology Award

The team consisting of Prof Henry Chung (Professor), Dr Leanne Chan (Associate Professor), Dr Tang Sai Chun (Assistant Professor, Harvard Medical School; EE PhD graduate 2000), Dr Chow Po Wa (EE PhD graduate 2017), and Prof Nathan Judson McDannold (Professor of Radiology, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School) has received the IEEE PELS Best ECCE Paper on Emerging Technology Award. The winning paper published in the proceedings of the 9th IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE 2017) is titled “Design of a Wireless Power Transfer System for Devices Carried by a Freely Moving Animal in Cage”.

The award was presented to the team by the IEEE Power Electronics Society at the ECCE 2018 held at Portland, Oregon, USA where a multi-disciplinary group of researchers, engineers and scientists from all over the world gathered to present and exchange break-through ideas relating to the energy conversion systems and technologies.

Journal Paper by Dr Wang Cheng being Published in Top Journal - Nature

Dr WANG Cheng, Assistant Professor, has published the journal paper “Integrated lithium niobate electro-optic modulators operating at CMOS-compatible voltages” in Nature on 24 September 2018.

Nature is regarded as one of the world's top academic journals and the world's most cited scientific journal. It is so excited that Dr Wang is our first EE faculty member having paper published in Nature.

The outstanding paper can be found at https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-018-0551-y. To give you a glimpse of the research work, here is a quote from the abstract: Here we overcome these limitations and demonstrate monolithically integrated lithium niobate electro-optic modulators that feature a CMOS-compatible drive voltage, support data rates up to 210 gigabits per second and show an on-chip optical loss of less than 0.5 decibels. We achieve this by engineering the microwave and photonic circuits to achieve high electro-optical efficiencies, ultra-low optical losses and group-velocity matching simultaneously.

Prof Luk
Fellow of the UK Royal Academy of Engineering 2018

Prof K M Luk has been elected the Fellow of the UK Royal Academy of Engineering 2018, which is a supreme recognition of his pioneering work on antennas.

The citation for Prof K M Luk by the UK Royal Academy of Engineering is: "Prof Luk is world-renowned for his pioneering work on antennas. For decades, he has perceptively investigated the design of microstrip antennas, small antennas, dielectric antennas and complementary antennas, all of which have found application worldwide in wireless communications. His research has featured on Chinese television and many other Asian outlets. He has published 350 papers in leading international journals, together with three highly regarded books and 15 international patents.”

The UK Royal Academy of Engineering is a national academy which aims to bring together the most successful and talented engineers from across the engineering sectors to advance and promote excellence in engineering for the benefit of the society. The Academy's Fellowship represents the nation’s best engineering researchers, innovators, entrepreneurs, business and industry leaders. Election to the Academy is by invitation only and about 50 Fellows are elected each year by peer review from nominations made by existing Fellows. They are distinguished by the title Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and the postnominal FREng.
