Highly Cited Researchers from Clarivate Analytics is an annual list recognizing scientists and social scientists who have demonstrated significant and broad influence in a chosen field or fields through the publication of multiple papers - highly cited by their peers - during the last decade. These Highly Cited Papers are defined as those publications that rank in the top 1% by citations for field and publication year in the Web of Science. This ‘top 1%’ of the global research community represent magnets in their respective discipline.
Prof K M Luk, Chair Professor of EE, has been conferred the 2019 Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress in the category of electronics and information technology by the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation (何梁何利基金科學與技術進步獎 - 電子信息技術獎) in recognition of his significant contributions on the design and analysis of microstrip antennas, magneto-electric dipole antennas and dielectric resonator antennas.
The Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation was established in 1994, with donations from the charitable foundations of Dr Ho Sin Hang, Dr Leung Kau-Kui, Dr Ho Tim, and Dr Lee Quo-wei’s Wei Lun Foundation Limited. It is a technology award established with the aims of rewarding outstanding and innovative Chinese academics and promoting science and technology development in the country. Prof Luk is an active and dedicated scholar on investigating and developing various types of antenna. His key contributions are:
- Development of various Microstrip Antennas such as offset stacked patch antenna, L-probe fed patch antenna, vertical patch antenna and the slot-loaded microstrip antenna which have been widely applied in modern wireless systems.
- Invention of Magneto-electric Dipole Antenna with enhanced efficiency in bandwidth, cross-polarization, and radiation pattern and gain which has been used to develop base station antennas and portable devices for 5G and beyond.
- A pioneer on the analysis and design of dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) motivating the development of non-metal antennas and liquid antennas.
Prof Luk’s continuous effort on inventing antennas has earned himself prestigious honours and awards like the 2011 State Technological Invention Award of China, 2017 IEEE AP-S John Kraus Antenna Award, Fellow of the UK Royal Academy of Engineering in 2018 and now the Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress by Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation.

Dr Cheng Wang has been awarded the NSFC Excellent Young Scientists Fund (Hong Kong and Macao) [國家自然科學基金優秀青年科學基金項目(港澳)] for his project “Integrated photonic devices”. He will receive a funding of RMB1.3 million to support his research project in Hong Kong to a maximum period of three years.
The Excellent Young Scientists Fund is granted annually to support young scientists (male below 38 and female below 40 years old) with achievements in basic research to conduct research in areas of their own choice. The fund was offered exclusively for the first time this year to young scientists from eight universities of the two cities — six from Hong Kong and two from Macao. It is highly competitive, only 25 projects are funded for Hong Kong and Macau.
Prof Hong Yan has been elected Member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts under the class Technical and Environmental Sciences in recognition of his work on intelligent multidimensional data analysis and imaging, video and biomedical applications.
The European Academy of Sciences and Arts is a non-governmental, European association committed to promoting scientific and societal progress. Founded in 1990 as a learned society, the members are leading scientists, artists, and practitioners of governance, who are dedicated to innovative research, interdisciplinary and transnational collaboration as well as the exchange and dissemination of knowledge. Among its members are 32 Nobel laureates.
Prof C H Chan has been awarded Distinguished Alumni Award 2019 by Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, for his significant contributions to fast electromagnetic analysis of scattering, antennas and interconnects, and to engineering higher education in Hong Kong.
The ECE Distinguished Alumni Award honors ECE Illinois graduates who have made professional and technical contributions that bring distinction to themselves, the department, and the University. The award was presented to Prof Chan at the Fall Alumni Awards Banquet held in September 2019.
Prof Henry Chung has been awarded Natural Science Prize of Shanghai (Second Class) by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government for his project “Research into Advanced Inverter Topologies for Renewable Energy Generation and Energy Storage Integration into AC Grid”.
The award is one of the six award categories under Shanghai Science and Technology Award 2019 which aims to recognize outstanding basic or applied research in science and technology.
In the 2019 IEEE International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation, and USNC-URSI Radio Science Meeting held during 7 - 12 July 2019 at Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A., our faculty members, PhD student and graduates were presented with the most significant international awards and certificates for their outstanding achievements and contributions to the field of antennas and propagation.
- Prof C H Chan – 2019 IEEE AP-S Harrington-Mittra Computational Electromagnetics Award, an international award to recognize the past technical accomplishments and future potential of an outstanding contributor to the area of Computational Electromagnetics. The citation for this award is “For fundamental contributions to fast solutions of integral equations using FFT with applications to scattering, antennas and interconnect structures in homogeneous and layered medium”. More can be found at CityU NewsCentre and CityU Weixin News.
- Mr Chen Ding, supervised by Prof K M Luk – 2019 First Prize Student Paper Award for the paper entitled "Wideband Omnidirectional Circularly Polarized Antenna for Millimeter-Wave Applications Using Printed Artificial Anisotropic Polarizer".
