Seven EE Faculty on Top Scientists List by Research.com

Seven EE faculty are on the Top 1000 Scientist List in the world or Top 100 Scientist List in China in the areas of “Electronics and Electrical Engineering”, “Computer Science”, and “Materials Science” according to the h-index, publications and citations collected on December 6th, 2021 by Research.com, one of the major websites for scientific ranking since 2014.  These reflect the high-impact research and outstanding accomplishments of our EE faculty.

Congratulation to Prof Henry Chung and Dr Ray Cheung - CityU Teaching Excellence Awards 2021/22

The 'Train-the-trainer Education Team', led by Prof Henry Chung and Dr Ray Cheung, together with three other faculty, has been selected to receive the CityU Teaching Excellence Awards 2021/22 for ‘STEAM: Sharing, Training, Empowering, Aspiring, Motivating’. A total of 27 nominations were received and the team is one of the 2 award recipients.

It is the second time Prof Chung and Dr Cheung have received the CityU Teaching Excellence Awards. Previous awards were separate awards, not team award. They are passionate about coaching students on projects which leads to a number of student awards and start-ups by EE students and graduates.

Prof Ron Chen being Titled Shun Hing Education and Charity Fund Chair Professor of Engineering

Prof Ron Chen, EE Chair Professor and Director of the Centre for Chaos and Complex Networks, has been appointed as Shun Hing Education and Charity Fund Chair Professor of Engineering, which is supported by the Shun Hing Education and Charity Fund (SHECF).

Named professorships represent the highest honour that a university can bestow upon a scholar for his/her outstanding academic and research achievements. It is also a lasting tribute to the donor who establishes the endowment or financially supports the Scheme. Prof Chen is a world-recognized scholar in the areas of nonlinear systems control and dynamics, as well as complex networks. He was elected IEEE Fellow in 1997 and became a Life Fellow in 2019. He has been put on the Highly Cited Researchers List (Clarivate Analytics) 2021 for the field “Engineering” and has been on the list for 9 years. He was also awarded EE Outstanding Teacher Awards in 2021, 2019, 2015, 2014 and 2013.

Dr Katie Chan, Assistant Professor of EE, has recently won the 2022 Paul Dudley White International Scholar Award for abstract “Identification of Genetic Signals For “Diabesity” -- Type 2 Diabetes And Obesity -- Among African American And European American Participants In Four Cohorts Of The TOPMed Consortium”.

The award, presented by the American Heart Association, is to recognize the primary author with the highest ranked abstract from Hong Kong at the EPI |Lifestyle Scientific Sessions 2022. The work of Dr Chan and her co-authors reflects Dr White’s vision for global excellence in cardiovascular science and medicine.

Dr Cheng Wang being Selected as Honoree of the 2021 MIT Technology Review 35 Innovators Under 35 (China)

Dr Cheng Wang has been selected as Honoree of the 2021 MIT Technology Review 35 Innovators Under 35 (China) for his achievement in inventing a unique thin-film LiNbO3 platform and its supporting micro-nano processing techniques, realizing high-performance, small-size, low-cost, and low-power optical interconnection solutions.

Recognizing the rise of Chinese technology talent, MIT Technology Review launched a 35 Innovators Under 35 specifically for China in May of 2017, a collaboration between MIT Technology Review in Cambridge and Chinese partners, TR China. It aims to recognize the young Chinese who could revolutionize our lifestyles and shape the future of technology and industry.

Prof K M Luk has been elected the Fellow of Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences (HKAES) 2021, a supreme recognition of his seminal contributions to antenna research and development over the past three decades.

HKAES is an organization of Hong Kong’s most eminent engineers of various disciplines who are recognized leaders of the profession with distinguished achievements in engineering sciences or applications. The Fellowship is characterized by dedication to serving Hong Kong, Mainland China and the region with top-quality engineering expertise. At most eight Fellows may be elected annually for personal achievements of exceptional merit and distinction.

Dr Ray Cheung being awarded HK$1.49 Million Gifted Education Fund
Dr Ray Cheung has been granted HK$1.49 million by the Gifted Education Fund, Education Bureau for the programme “AIoT Coding, Engineering and Entrepreneurial (AIoT CE2) Skills Education for Gifted Students” which aims to equip the gifted students with the knowledge and skills in solving authentic problems in daily life with AI and IoT. Participating students will also be given the opportunity to showcase their projects at exhibition and join a start-up project pitching competition.

Dr K F Tsang, Associate Professor of EE, has recently received the 2021 IEEE Product Safety Engineering Society (PSES) Outstanding Achievement Award for his contributions towards standards development.

The IEEE PSES focuses on the theory, design, development and practical implementation of product safety engineering methodologies and techniques for equipment and devices.
