Third EE Academic Staff Meeting in 2021/22
The third academic staff meeting among all EE faculty was held over Zoom on 11 March 2022. The Chairman presented updates on the development of teaching, research, and industrial collaborations of the Department in the first half of Semester B. Working, teaching and examination arrangement adjusting to COVID situation and the actions for confirmed COVID cases were also highlighted and discussed.
The Chairman registered a vote of thanks to all EE staff for their concerted and continuous effort on maintaining the teaching and research quality as well as the safety among the EE community under this special time.

Second Departmental Advisory Committee Meeting in 2021/22
The Second Departmental Advisory Committee Meeting for the academic year 2021/22 was held on 9 March 2022 over Zoom where all the members from the industry and the Department attended.
Thanks to the active discussion among members who are experienced professionals in the EE field, constructive advices and suggestions were collected for strengthening the publicity to and recruitment of high school students, enhancing the development of teaching and research in the Greater Bay Area and the overall strategic development of the Department.

EEHS Professor Research Sharing Webinar Series, Session 1
EEHS invited 3 EE faculties as guest speakers: Dr. Alex Wong, Dr. Nekouei Ehsan and Dr. Jiang Chaoqiang for this Professor Sharing. This seminar provided an opportunity for student to gain some insights into recent research topics and prepare for future studies and careers.

Teaching Assistant Enrichment Seminar
An online enrichment seminar was delivered on 14 February 2022 to all PhD students for equipping them to perform their Teaching Assistant (TA) role better.
Dr Yanni Sun, EE Outstanding Teaching Awardee in 2020/21, was invited to share her teaching experiences and tips for preparing a lecture. Two senior PhD students with good TA performance also joined on the day to share with peers the good practices for carrying out TA duties and hands-on experiences on using CANVAS for grading.

Farewell Get-together for Dr Wallace Tang
It is with considerable reluctance that the Department will lose a long-serving colleague, Dr Wallace Tang, EE Associate Professor, in February due to his early retirement. Dr Tang has served the Department for 26 years since he joined us in 1996, and he is now the Lead of EE Laboratories. A farewell get-together was held on 24 January 2022 to register department’s votes of thanks.
Dr Tang attracted some 70 colleagues to give him a warm send-off through Zoom and on site. We had sincerest sharing and best wishes from friends, making the event a memorable and special one.
Our best wishes to Dr Tang for his new page of life and enjoy!

EE Soft Skills Seminar – “Graduate School Application in the US and HK”
Dr. Rosa CHAN, Associate Professor and Dr. WANG Cheng, Assistant Professors of Department of Electrical Engineering, City University of HK, shared with students, the graduate school application in the US and HK, in a soft-skill seminar talk held on 21 January, 2022.
The valuable key takeaways covered by Dr. Chan and Dr. Wang included whether students should go for graduate school and their expectations, pros and cons of graduate schools in the US and HK, criteria for a successful application to US graduate schools and to HKPFS and the current global situation changes the prospects of graduate school applications. Around 20 students joined the seminar and found the information very valuable.

Student Internship Fostering University-Industry Collaboration
Close to 46 CEOs, directors, vice presidents, division heads, managers and officers of 35 companies participated in an online briefing session for EE Professional Internship Programme and other student learning opportunities held on 7 January, 2022.
The gathering was fruitful with many constructive exchanges and EE looks forward to more events and initiatives to foster university-industry collaboration and bridge our students and faculty with industry friends!

Power Your Future Workshop
A two day workshop was held on 4-5 January for Year 1 BDEGEE students. 18 students were able to join the workshop. The workshop aimed to open the eyes of students to what the ELEL Major is, and what opportunities are available in their future career.
The workshop began with a short talk by Prof. Henry Chung on his research and local industry. This was then followed by practical work to improve student’s practical skills. Students were given two projects to build that were both practical and useful. Most students managed to build both the wind and solar power generator which they were allowed to take home. This was supplemented with some basic theories to reinforce some basic understanding that students have learnt in previous courses. At the end, students were given a chance to say which would win, wind or solar.

CityU-EE x Cyberport Joint Lab: CityU Underwater Robotics Team in Digital Entertainment Leadership Forum 2021 – Infinity Games
CityU-EE and Cyberport have successfully launched the CityU-EE x Cyberport Joint Lab on 18 November 2021. As part of the collaboration initiatives, CityU Underwater Robotics Team (UR Team) participated in the Digital Entertainment Leadership Forum (DELF 2021) held at Cyberport during 10 – 12 December 2021, sharing the excitement of co-hosting the Infinity Games themed with the Sea, Land and Air elements by presenting the underwater football show matches. The team also organized the workshops for the visitors to build their own Basic ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle).
This was certainly an eye-opening experience for the members of CityU UR team which allowed them to showcase the team’s recent development as well as to interact with resourceful personalities from different industries. Their tireless effort contributed to the success of the event. Visitors enjoyed the esports-like underwater football show match and shown strong interests to explore engineering knowledge and support the new generation to know more about EE.
