Prof K M Luk
Prof K M Luk being conferred the 2019 Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress by the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation

Prof K M Luk, Chair Professor of EE, has been conferred the 2019 Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress in the category of electronics and information technology by the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation (何梁何利基金科學與技術進步獎 - 電子信息技術獎) in recognition of his significant contributions on the design and analysis of microstrip antennas, magneto-electric dipole antennas and dielectric resonator antennas.

The Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation was established in 1994, with donations from the charitable foundations of Dr Ho Sin Hang, Dr Leung Kau-Kui, Dr Ho Tim, and Dr Lee Quo-wei’s Wei Lun Foundation Limited. It is a technology award established with the aims of rewarding outstanding and innovative Chinese academics and promoting science and technology development in the country. Prof Luk is an active and dedicated scholar on investigating and developing various types of antenna. His key contributions are:

  • Development of various Microstrip Antennas such as offset stacked patch antenna, L-probe fed patch antenna, vertical patch antenna and the slot-loaded microstrip antenna which have been widely applied in modern wireless systems.
  • Invention of Magneto-electric Dipole Antenna with enhanced efficiency in bandwidth, cross-polarization, and radiation pattern and gain which has been used to develop base station antennas and portable devices for 5G and beyond.
  • A pioneer on the analysis and design of dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) motivating the development of non-metal antennas and liquid antennas.

Prof Luk’s continuous effort on inventing antennas has earned himself prestigious honours and awards like the 2011 State Technological Invention Award of China, 2017 IEEE AP-S John Kraus Antenna Award, Fellow of the UK Royal Academy of Engineering in 2018 and now the Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress by Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation.

Excellent Young Scientists Fund
Dr Cheng Wang being awarded National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) - Excellent Young Scientists Fund (Hong Kong and Macao)

Dr Cheng Wang has been awarded the NSFC Excellent Young Scientists Fund (Hong Kong and Macao) [國家自然科學基金優秀青年科學基金項目(港澳)] for his project “Integrated photonic devices”. He will receive a funding of RMB1.3 million to support his research project in Hong Kong to a maximum period of three years.

The Excellent Young Scientists Fund is granted annually to support young scientists (male below 38 and female below 40 years old) with achievements in basic research to conduct research in areas of their own choice. The fund was offered exclusively for the first time this year to young scientists from eight universities of the two cities — six from Hong Kong and two from Macao. It is highly competitive, only 25 projects are funded for Hong Kong and Macau.
