Prof Ron Chen has been put on World’s Top 1000 Scientist List according to the 2020 6th edition of Top Scientists Ranking for Computer Science & Electronics prepared by Guide2Research. Prof Chen is ranked 16th worldwide and ranked the 1st in Hong Kong and in Asia by H-Index of 149 with 100,895 citations. There are 144 Chinese scholars being put on the list and Prof Chen is one of the top 10 Chinese scholars, being ranked 4th among the 144 listed Chinese scholars. Prof Chen’s research on chaos theory and hence the discovery of “Chen System” has attracted extensive attention in the academic community and has earned him this international recognition.
The ranking represents H-index, database and logic programming (DBLP) computer science bibliography, and citations values gathered by 16 May 2020. The analysis is based on a detailed examination of more than 6000 profiles on Google Scholar and DBLP. To know more the successful story of Prof Chen, you may check Guide2Research, CityU News, or Hong Kong Commercial Daily.
Prof Evelyn Hu, Honorary Professor of EE and the Tarr-Coyne Professor of Applied Physics and Electrical Engineering at Harvard University, has been selected to receive the 2020 IEEE Andrew S. Grove Award. The citation for this award is “For pioneering contributions to microelectronics fabrication technologies for nanoscale and photonic devices”.
The IEEE Andrew S. Grove Award was established in 1999 and sponsored by the IEEE Electron Devices Society. It aims to recognize scholars with outstanding contributions to solid-state devices and technology. Prof Hu has been focusing on developing techniques with high spatial precision to sculpt nanostructures from solid-state materials with minimal damage. Her innovative micro- and nanofabrication technologies have enabled the continued shrinking of integrated circuits. Industrial and academic research groups use her methods to achieve nanometer-scale control over device geometries while maintaining excellent optical properties, impacting areas ranging from telecommunications to high-speed electronics. Her work has resulted in lasers with record low threshold values, single-photon sources, improved extraction of light from indium-gallium-nitride light emitting diodes (LEDs), and coupled light-matter states. The many benefits realized from her achievements include the reduction of electricity consumption by replacing traditional lighting with more efficient LED lighting as well as paving the way for quantum information processing.
Dr Sammy Chan has received the IEEE Systems Journal Best Paper Award 2020. The winning paper, co-authored with scholars from Hohai University, Nanjing Agricultural University and Shenyang Ligong University, is titled “An Uneven Cluster-Based Mobile Charging Algorithm for Wireless Rechargeable Sensor Networks”.
The Systems Journal Best Paper Award of the IEEE Systems Council will be presented annually to the papers deemed the best among those published in the IEEE Systems Journal (ISJ) during the preceding calendar year. Each year up to 1% of the eligible papers can be selected for the award. There were 793 papers published in 2019 and Dr Chan’s paper is one of the 7 papers selected for the 2020 award.
EE Department has done extremely well in the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) 2020/21 exercise given its highly competitive nature. There were 9 candidates selected by the university for nomination to the Research Grants Council (RGC) and 7 candidates were selected/wait listed for the award. The success rate is 77.8%. It is the best results for EE over the years and EE received the highest number of awards among all academic departments/schools at CityU.
The bright candidates will be supervised by our Prof K M Luk, Prof H C So, Prof Michael Tse, Dr Steve Wong and Dr Yixuan Yuan and are expected to study with EE in the academic year 2020/21.
Prof Evelyn Hu, Honorary Professor of EE Department and the Tarr-Coyne Professor of Applied Physics and Electrical Engineering at Harvard University, has been appointed as Senior Fellow of Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS), City University of Hong Kong (https://www.ias.cityu.edu.hk/en/people/senior-fellow).
HKIAS appoints Fellows from the ranks of scholars and researchers who are internationally recognized leaders in their fields. Prof Hu’s research focuses on high-resolution fabrication of compound semiconductor electronic and optoelectronic devices, candidate structures for the realization of quantum computation schemes, and on novel device structures formed through the heterogeneous integration of materials. She has also developed biological approaches to the formation of electronic and photonic materials. Prof Hu is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Academia Sinica of Taiwan, a recipient of an NSF Distinguished Teaching Fellow award, an AAAS Lifetime Mentor Award, and a Fellow of the IEEE. She also holds an honorary Doctorate of Engineering from the University of Glasgow and an honorary Doctorate of Science from Heriot Watt University.
By joining HKIAS, Prof Hu will work with and mentor research fellows, young scholars and students through distinguished lectures, seminars, workshops, and many other activities and events. We look forward to having Prof Hu to work closely with us in the advancement of science, engineering and technology.
Prof Moshe ZUKERMAN, our Chair Professor of Information Engineering, and Dr. Ray CHEUNG, our Associate Professor, have received the inaugural CENG Outstanding Teaching Awards for 2019-2020 for their dedication to teaching and creative efforts to make learning enjoyable. The Selection Panel was deeply impressed by their outstanding teaching which demonstrates innovative, effective and well-implemented instructional pedagogies and approaches, and the embodiment of the Discovery-Enriched Curriculum.
Prof Leung Tsang, Honorary Professor of the Department, has been elected to the 2020 class of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE).
Election to the NAE is among the highest honors accorded in our profession. Global membership in NAE comprises only 2590 individuals, including the 87 US and 18 international members in this year's class. The NAE recognized Professor Tsang "For contributions in wave scattering and microwave remote sensing theories for satellite missions."
Prof Tsang is a world-renowned expert in the field of theoretical and computational electromagnetics, and in particular microwave remote sensing of the earth. His research has laid the foundation for the analysis of radar and radiometer remote sensing data, and for the development of airborne and spaceborne systems aimed at monitoring the environment, including: monitoring climate change; improving hydrological predictions; and managing water and agricultural resources.
He is a fellow of IEEE, the Optical Society of America, and the Electromagnetics Academy. He was a faculty at University of Washington and is now a faculty in the EECS department of the University of Michigan.
