Staff Achievements 2020
Prof H C So has won the Outstanding Supervisor Award which has been established since 2017 to promote, recognize and reward excellent research supervision. The scheme is funded by the Office of the Provost (PRVT) and administered by the School of Graduate Studies (SGS). Selection is determined by evidence of outstanding results of supervision over a number of years based on what their students have gone on to achieve after graduation. A total of 9 EE faculty had received this award since 2017.
Prof Evelyn Hu, Honorary Professor of EE and the Tarr-Coyne Professor of Applied Physics and Electrical Engineering at Harvard University, has been selected to receive the IEEE/RSE James Clerk Maxwell Medal. The citation for this award is “For leadership in nanoscale science and engineering, and for seminal contributions at the intersection of semiconductor electronics and photonics.”.
The James Clerk Maxwell Medal is awarded jointly by the RSE (The Royal Society of Edinburgh) and the IEEE for groundbreaking contributions that have had an exceptional impact on the development of electronics and electrical engineering or related fields. The annual prize, established since 2006 and one of the highest awards presented by IEEE, is named in honour of James Clerk Maxwell, the outstanding 19th Century Scottish mathematician and physicist.
Dr Wang Cheng has been conferred the Croucher Innovation Award 2020. The Croucher Innovation Awards are substantial awards which aim to identify exceptionally talented scientists from all countries working at an internationally competitive level and to offer support to these “rising stars” at a formative stage in their careers. Dr Wang will receive a funding of HK$5 million to be used over five years for advancing his expertise and research work, contributing to the development of education and research in Hong Kong.
Dr Wang’s current research focuses on realising integrated lithium niobate photonic circuits for applications in optical communications and nonlinear optics. He works on the study of light-matter interaction and optoelectronic phenomena in nanostructures. Using state-of-the-art nanofabrication technology, Dr Wang and his team develop photonic elements that can be applied for data communications, new color generation, ultimate sensors and quantum technology. Dr Wang, as lead author, published 4 papers in top journals - Nature. In recent two years, he has also received The President’s Awards 2020 and The Excellent Young Scientists Fund (Hong Kong and Macau) of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (2019) .

The journal paper “Establishment of a morphological atlas of the Caenorhabditis elegans embryo using deep-learning-based 4D segmentation”, authored by Prof Hong YAN (Wong Chung Hong Professor of Data Engineering and Chair Professor of EE), Mr Jianfeng CAO (PhD student) and scholars from Hong Kong Baptist University and Peking University, has been published in Nature Communications on 7 December 2020 (https://rdcu.be/cbNVQ).
According to Prof Yan: “Each animal (or human) is grown from a single cell, a fertilized egg. Amazingly, successive divisions of this cell and its daughter cells will form animal organs and body automatically. We use laser beams to obtain cell images at different depths and at different time points to form a 4D (xyzt) data array during cell division. Hong Kong Baptist University and Peking University did wet-lab experiments with C. elegans (worm) to produce terabytes of data, and CityU performed computational analysis. We developed machine learning methods to extract, track and visualize cells and analyze their functions.”

A study, led by Prof John Ioannidis from Stanford University, showed 25 EE faculty in the top 2 percent of scientists globally. The study combines several different metrics to systematically rank the most influential scientists by scientific field as measured by citations. Dr Wang Cheng has been honored The President’s Award 2020.
The President’s Awards are established by the University in recognition of high-performing faculty who have made exemplary contributions to research and professional education that have helped CityU achieve local and global distinction. Dr Wang is a young, active and promising scholars. Since joining EE in 2018, he has been awarded several major competitive grants. He, as lead author, published 4 papers in top journals - Nature. He has also received the EE Outstanding Teacher Award in 2019/20.
Prof K M Luk, Prof C H Chan and Dr Steve Wong have been awarded RMB1.25 million by the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province (廣東省財政廳科技創新戰略專項資金（粵港澳聯合實驗室等）項目) for establishing The Greater Bay Area Joint Laboratory of Big Data Imaging and Communications. This project is led by Shenzhen Academy of Information and Communication Technology and in collaboration with Shenzhen University and 5 companies in mainland China. The total funding amount is RMB 5 million and the CityU’s share is RMB 1.25 million. There is also RMB 16 million from the supporting industrial parties. The construction period of the Joint Laboratory is first set as 3 years. It will receive continuous funding support upon satisfactory completion of the first term of construction.
The mission of the Joint Laboratory is to sustain smart city development in the core technological areas in big data, imaging, and communications. They will output state-of-the-art technologies for 5G, 6G, big data, imaging, and communications through cross-disciplinary integration, and collaborative innovation of industry and academia. The outputs through this joint platform will provide scientific, industrial, and social impacts in the cities of Greater Bay Area and across the globe.
In 2019, the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province initiated the construction of the first batch of 10 joint laboratories, which achieved good results in providing key support for Guangdong's economic and social development. In 2020, the second batch of 10 joint laboratories are approved. All leading principals in the joint laboratory must be international and national leaders in the field. The approved “The Greater Bay Area Joint Laboratory of Big Data Imaging and Communications” is the first joint laboratory in the field of information and communication technology.

Prof Henry Chung has been conferred the CityU Outstanding Research Award 2020 in recognition of his exceptionally outstanding research achievements. The award will be formally presented to him at the University Congregation in November 2020.
Prof Chung is an active scholar in Power Electronics with over 200 journal publications. He has also been working closely with the industry on impactful applied research.
Prof Ron Chen (Chair Professor of EE) and Dr Yang Lou (Post Doc of EE) have received the Chinese Institute of Electronics Best Paper Award 2020 (中國電子學會 - 電子資訊領域優秀科技論文). The winning paper, co-authored with a scholar from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, is titled "Enhancing Controllability Robustness of 𝑞-Snapback Networks through Redirecting Edges". Dr Lou is also our PhD graduate (2017). During his studies with EE, Dr Lou was supervised by Dr Kelvin Yuen and specialized in researching techniques for improving online and offline history-assisted evolutionary algorithms.
The awards will be presented annually to the papers deemed the best among the submissions in terms of its impact, originality and novelty. There were around 100 submissions this year and the paper by Prof Chen and Dr Lou is one of the 8 papers selected for the 2020 award.
EE Outstanding Teacher Awards aim at recognizing excellence in teaching as well as promoting effective teaching and learning in the Department of Electrical Engineering. All students taking EE courses in the academic year 2019/20 were invited to vote for the best teachers in their eyes. The awardees of 2019/20 are:
