School of Creative Media Outstanding Teacher shared topic on “Situating Science and Technology in New Contexts”

Dr Miu-Ling Lam, Associate Professor/Program Leader of Bachelor of Arts and Science in New Media, School of Creative Media of CityU, was invited to speak on the topic “Situating Science and Technology in New Contexts” on 21 November 2018. Dr Lam received CityU “Teaching Excellence Awards" in 2018.

In her lunch talk to EE, Dr Lam presented several examples of arts-science applications – polarized light and its visual effects. Student projects like Miss-My-Face, where the facial features were obscured when video capture by CCTV. Dr Lam has also conducted large project funded by HK Jockey Club – TEDY (Technologies for the Elderly and Disables people by Youth) where 239 students (some are EE students), 10 NGOs and one hospital are involved. In TEDY, devices are prototyped for the visually impaired, e.g. Audio Labeler. Besides a worthy social service, TEDY also provides platform for creativity and practical skills to our undergraduate students from various disciplines.

EE staff were much impressed by Dr Lam’s work – a fusion of engineering skills with visual arts, and its applications to social-aware projects.
