IEEE International Workshop on Electromagnetics is an international conference which provides not only a platform for scientists and engineers to exchange their ideas, but also a good venue for young scholars and students to demonstrate their innovative results in the field of electromagnetic theory, antennas and related applications/topics.
Three EE students WU Haotian (ECE; 2013 entering major), LIU Xinhong (INFE; 2013 entering major) and IP Wai Kei (CE; 2012 entering major) teamed up with three other CS students in two teams and won the Third Prize in the 2014 Intel Cup Undergraduate Electronic Design Contest-Embedded System Design Invitational Contest held in Shanghai. The supervisor of the teams is Dr Tan Chee Wei, Assistant Professor (CS).
2014 Intel Cup Undergraduate Electronic Design Contest-Embedded System Design Invitational Contest, (Intel Cup Embedded System Design Contest: ESDC), initiated by the PRC Government, is hosted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and solely sponsored by Intel Corporation. Held every 2 years, the contest provides an opportunity for top undergraduate students to design a working system based on an assigned Intel embedded platform over a period of three months. Designs can apply to any device that could be used in a real-world application, such as in the home, automobile, medical, industrial, or other industries. It encourages improvement of the curriculum structure and content in the disciplines of Information Technology and Electronics, promotes implementation of well-rounded education within higher education institutions, and fosters innovation skills amongst students.
Two PhD students, Mr. CHUI Kwok Tai and Mr. LI Yee Shing Benjamin, together with an ECE graduate, Mr. CHOW Wai Hei, have received the 2nd Prize Award in the 2014 IEEE Region 10 Student Paper Contest (Post-Graduate Category). The winning paper, supervised by Dr. Kim Fung Tsang and Prof. Henry Shu Hung Chung, is called "Driver Fatigue Detection using A Novel ECG based Drowsiness Detection Algorithm with Head Distraction Detection".
The IEEE Region 10 Student Activities Committee conducts two student paper contests every year, one for the Postgraduate (PG) and the other for the Undergraduate (UG) IEEE Student Members in the Region. The papers are judged based on the technical content, Innovation, practical implementation, references and overall presentation.
PhD student, Mr CHI Haoran, has recently received the 1st Runner-up in The Institution of Engineering and Technology Hong Kong Young Professionals Exhibition & Competition 2014 (YPEC 2014) - Postgraduate Session.
