IEEE International Symposium on Product Compliance Engineering-Asia 2018 – “Product Safety for Smart City” was organized by IEEE Product Safety Engineering Society which aims at promoting the awareness of safety problems in smart cities and the development of advanced knowledge of solutions. The PPT and Paper competition provided platforms for professionals and engineers to exchange ideas and learn from one another. The competitions also encouraged contestants to take advantage of the state-of-the-art technologies to improve quality of life in terms of safety.

Winning Bronze Medal
Winning Bronze Medal in 2018 ACM-ICPC Asia Xuzhou Regional Contest

Miss JIN Shutong (INFE, final year), who formed team with two students from Department of Computer Science, has won the Bronze Medal in the 2018 ACM-ICPC Asia Xuzhou Regional Contest. Miss Jin has been trained by Dr Albert Sung and Mr Van Ting under the ACM-ICPC Training Workshops organized by EE Department, while the joint team was led by Dr Minming Li and Dr Kenneth Lee of CS Department for joining the competition.

The contest hosted by China University of Mining and Technology attracted over 275 teams from 169 universities in China to compete for the awards.

Merit Prize of HKEIA Innovation & Technology Project Competition Award 2018

Two EE 2018 graduates won the Merit Prize of HKEIA Innovation & Technology Project Competition Award 2018.

The IES Inaugural Inter-chapter Competition 2018 – “Advances on Smart Cities” was organized by IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES) which aims at fostering advanced knowledge and awareness of Smart Cities projects and innovations. The competition also serves as a platform to nurture professionals and engineers to effectively apply and utilize the state-of-the-art technologies to improve quality of life.

EE Student and Graduate Winning Ten Prizes at iCAN 2018

Miss Lam Michelle Wing Yan (INFE, Yr-3) and Mr Chan Peter (CE, 2018 graduate) have won a total of 10 prizes at iCAN 2018 by individual project or team projects with students and graduates of MNE and ACE.

Organized by Toronto International Society of Innovation & Advanced Skills (TISIAS), iCAN 2018 is an international invention exhibition and global networking event held in Canada for worldwide inventors to showcase their creative inventions, innovation projects and scientific research outcomes. INFE Student Winning HK$100K from The Cyberport University Partnership Programme 2018

Miss Wong Man Chi (INFE, final year) who teamed up with student from Department of Management Sciences and graduate of Department of Social and Behavioural Sciences, has been selected to join The Cyberport University Partnership Programme (CUPP) 2018 and awarded HK$100K seed fund to develop their FinTech start-up project “Global Payment Aggregator for Merchant”. The winning team is supervised by Dr Ray Cheung, Associate Professor of EE.

CUPP is a FinTech-focused entrepreneurship programme for local university students to unleash their potential, gain insights into the global market, and receive a unique chance to participate in an Entrepreneurship Boot Camp in the US and receive mentorship from industry elites. Cyberport has run such a programme since 2015 and it’s the fourth consecutive year that our student has been selected to join the programme and won the HK$100K seed fund. It’s so exciting that there are totally ten students representing five teams being awarded the CUPP seed fund to develop their FinTech start-up projects since 2015.

Third Prize in Huawei Cup
Third Prize in Huawei Cup – IC Competition for Postgraduate Students in China (首屆中國研究生創“芯”大賽)

Three PhD students, Mr HUANG Weipei, Mr LYU Songyang and Mr XU Zhe, have won the Third Prize in the Huawei Cup - IC Competition for Postgraduate Students in China (首屆中國研究生創“芯”大賽) which is organized by China Academic Degrees & Graduate Education Development Centre (CDGDC, 中國教育部學位與研究生教育發展中心) and Children & Youth Science Centre (CYSC) of Association for Science and Technology (中國科協青少年科技中心). The winning project, supervised by Dr Ray Cheung, is called “High Performance Hardware Architecture for Singular Spectrum Analysis of Hankel Tensors”.

There were 254 teams submitted applications and 148 teams were selected to join the final round. Our team is the only team from Hong Kong joined the competition. Teams were invited to submit creative, innovative or entrepreneurial works related to the IC industry, including but not limited to IC design, manufacturing, packaging, testing, materials, equipment, MEMS and their applications. This competition offered a platform for postgraduate students to demonstrate their integrated circuit design ability. It also provided students with precious opportunities for knowledge exchange and exploration. Apart from the competition, talent training seminar, high-level forum on IC production, education and research, as well as enterprise exhibition and recruitment activities were arranged for participants to gain all-rounded exposure about IC. Pacific Rim 2018
Best Paper Award at CLEO Pacific Rim 2018

Prof K S Chiang (Chair Professor) and his PhD student, Mr Chang Zeshan, have won the Best Paper Award at the 13th Pacific Rim Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO Pacific Rim 2018). The winning paper is titled “All-optical control of propagation loss with a graphene-embedded polymer waveguide”.

The Conference is organized by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and co-sponsored by the Optical Society, IEEE Photonics Society Hong Kong Chapter and the IEEE Hong Kong Section. The Optical Society is the Technical Co-sponsor of the Conference and accepted papers for the Conference shall be eligible for inclusion in the OSA Digest. There were around 600 contributed papers and Prof Chiang’s team is one of the five award recipients.

Third Prize in the 3rd Underwater Robot
Third Prize in the 3rd Underwater Robot Competition (第三屆上海“臨港杯”水下智慧型機器人大賽)

The CityU Underwater Robotics Team has won the Third Prize in the 3rd Underwater Robot Competition which was held in Shanghai, China (第三屆上海“臨港杯”水下智慧型機器人大賽). The following winning team, comprising five EE students and four students from Department of Computer Science, Department of Mechanical Engineering and Department of Materials Science and Engineering, is supervised by Dr Ray Cheung (Associate Professor, EE), Dr Angus Wu (Assistant Professor, EE), Dr Pakpong Chirarattananon (Assistant Professor, Biomedical Engineering) and Dr Yajing Shen (Assistant Professor, Biomedical Engineering).

24 teams joined the competition this year including top mainland universities such as Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Northwestern Polytechnical University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Zhejiang University and Shanghai Maritime University. Champion in IET Young Professionals Exhibition & Competition 2018 (Postgraduate Section)

Mr ZHU Hongxu (PhD student) and Mr LIU Yucheng (Research Assistant), have been awarded the Champion in IET Young Professionals Exhibition & Competition (YPEC) 2018 – Postgraduate Section. The winning project, supervised by Dr K F Tsang, is titled "A new machine learning based real-time anomaly detection system for Hong Kong’s Internet".

YPEC, organized by Institution of Engineering and Technology, is an annual exhibition and competition for students and young professionals in Hong Kong to present their innovative engineering ideas. The theme this year is “Supernova”. Exhibits covered a wide spectrum of engineering and technology from improving your sleep quality and online shopping experience to new idea on radar technology, machine learning, solar car building and even a Mars colony plan.
