Two PhD Graduates being Elected IEEE Fellow 2022

Prof CHE Wenquan, PhD graduate of 2004, has been elected IEEE Fellow for her contributions to planar transmission line structures for microwave passive components. During her studies with EE, Prof Che specialized in microwave nonreciprocal latching ferrite devices under the supervision of Prof Edward Yung. Prof Che is now the Professor of School of Electric and Information Engineering, South China University of Technology. Her current research interests include microwave antenna technology and medical application of microwave technology.

Prof ZHANG Xiu Yin, PhD graduate of 2009, has been elected IEEE Fellow for his contributions to the design of filtering antennas. He was supervised by Prof Quan Xue during his studies in EE, researching in novel RF resonators and bandpass filters. Prof Zhang currently is the Professor and Vice Dean of School of Electric and Information Engineering, South China University of Technology, focusing on research in antennas and arrays, MMIC, and microwave/terahertz circuits.

PhD Graduate Winning Two Prizes at IEEE iWEM 2021 and CSRQWTC 2021

Mr. Dai Xin, a PhD student who graduated in October 2021, has won prizes at two conferences held recently. Prof. K M Luk was his supervisor during his study in EE.

Honorary Mention in the 2021 IEEE ComSoc Student Competition

A team of PhD students comprising Mr Liu Yucheng, Mr Wang Hao, and Ms Wei Yang has been granted the Honorary Mention in the 2021 IEEE ComSoc Student Competition - Communications Technology Changing the World. The winning project, supervised by Dr K F Tsang, is titled "Complex Network Modeled Adaptive Quarantine Strategy with Localization for Anti-COVID-19”. 

The competition held annually aims to encourage communications engineering students to expand their knowledge, to test and showcase new skills, and to innovate. The competition this year, with the theme of Communication Technology Changing the World, honors students who have demonstrated the ability to enhance people's lives via the use of communication technology.

Winning Silver Award in Hong Kong Cyber Security New Generation Capture the Flag (CTF) Challenge 2021

Mr Leung Ho Kei, EE Year-1 student, who teamed up with students from Warwick University and a high school, has won the Silver Award in Hong Kong Cyber Security New Generation Capture the Flag (CTF) Challenge 2021 - Open Category.

The contest, jointly organized by Hong Kong Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Centre (HKCERT) and Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC), aims to strengthen the cyber security skills and awareness of the industry and students and encourage problem solving through teamwork, creative thinking and cyber security skills. Participating teams were required to prepare and submit the proof of answer (write-up) of 3 solved challenges selected by the organizers in 48 hours.  The top three teams of each category who have the highest scores and the write-ups confirmed by the organizers will win the contest.

PhD Students Ranked the Second in Facial Micro-Expression (FME) Challenge at the ACM Multimedia 2021

Two PhD students, Mr FAN Xinqi and Mr SHAHID Ali Raza, under the supervision of Prof Hong Yan, have been ranked the Second in Facial Micro-Expression (FME) Challenge held at the ACM Multimedia 2021 for the paper titled “Facial Micro-Expression Generation based on Deep Motion Re-targeting and Transfer Learning”.

The winning team attempted the facial micro-expression generation task. The goal of this task was to generate specific micro-expression (source) on the given template faces (target). Three experts from UK, Finland and China were invited to evaluate the submissions. The final decision were made based on the result performance and the paper quality.

An EE team, comprising Miss Wei Yang (PhD student), Mr Wang Hao (PhD student), Mr Liu Yucheng (PhD student) and Mr Lee Yo-che (INFE student), has won the Work of Excellence Award in the region of Hong Kong SAR and Macao SAR in The Council of the Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences (CAETS) Communication Prize - High Potential Innovation Prize in China 2021. The winning project, supervised by Dr K F Tsang, is titled “Internet of Things Maturity Index (IDex) – IoT Michelin: Best Practices”.

EE Team Winning Three Awards at Three Innovation Competitions Respectively

A team of EE final year students, supervised by Dr Alan Lam, has won three awards at three different innovation competitions respectively. The winning project is “Aero-Hydroponic Agriculture IoT System”. Through these competitions, students learnt to be creative and innovative in applying technology to solve real life problems.

EE Student Winning Gold Award in ASM Technology Award 2021

Miss LEUNG Ching Yee Angel (ECE graduate 2021) has won the Gold Award in ASM Technology Award 2021. The winning project, supervised by Dr Steve Wong, is called “Design of a Wideband antenna with beam steering for sub-6 band of 5G”.

ASM Technology Award has been established since 2016. It aims to recognize and reward students with outstanding Final Year Projects which demonstrate excellence in technology and innovation

MSc Student Winning First Prize in The 8th CCF Big Data & Computing Intelligence Contest

Mr Zheng Shaomian (MScMIT), who teamed up with a member from a company in China, has won the First Prize in The 8th CCF Big Data & Computing Intelligence Contest. The winning project is titled "Private Information Extraction Model based on Multi-stage Fine-tuning and Pre-training".

The contest was organized and launched by China Computer Federation in 2013 which aims to promote the development of big data and computing intelligence and nurture quality talents for the field. There were 1483 teams joined the contest to attempt different questions and 5 teams were shortlisted for each question for entering the final. Mr Zheng outcompete the other 4 teams in his chosen question and won the First Prize.
