CityU Scored the Highest “Expected Output Index” in Electrical and Electronic Engineering
CityU has been put at the top of the list worldwide for the field “Electrical and Electronic Engineering” by scoring “expected output index of 2.6”, according to Times Higher Education World University Rankings. It means that 26 percent of CityU’s scholarship in this area was in the top 10 percent of cited publications from 2014 to 2017.

The First Joint-School Student Symposium (第1屆“兩地三校”青年學生論壇)
The first 2-cities-3-universities (City University of Hong Kong, Harbin Institute of Technology and Sun Yat-Sen University) undergraduate student forum was held on 14 April 2018 at Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen).
The event was well participated by about 50 students coming from the three universities; among them, 14 were EE students of CityU. The forum discussed several timely Hi-Tec issues on both industry and education. The host also invited Tencent (Machine Learning) Research Engineer to share his views and Hi-Tech perspectives at Tencent with students. The event is highly successful enabling EE students in broadening horizons on Hi-Tech and Hi-Tech education in China and overseas.

Launch of Bi-weekly EE Multidisciplinary Research Forum
Recently a bi-weekly departmental forum, focusing on multidisciplinary research, is successfully launched in the format of a faculties’ lunch greeting at Electronic Engineering Department. The forum consists of two sections of free discussions (before and after the talk) and a 20-30 min research-sharing presentation.

Gathering with EE Mentors and Tutors
On 23 March 2018, the Department organized a causal gathering among mentors, tutors and professors and around 20 participants joined the event. During the gathering, students provided constructive comment and feedback regarding the EE Student Mentoring and EE Peer Tutoring Scheme, and shared genuinely their study lives in EE Department. Everyone enjoyed the fruitful exchange and the nice food in a relaxing Friday evening.

EE Softskills Series (IV) Hard Skills VS. Soft Skills
Mastery of soft skills has been considered one of the most important aspects for career development and job hunting success. To improve students’ soft skills, EE Department invited Mr. Jim Costello of HSBC to share with students what skills really mean to professionals in large international corporates in his talk titled, “Hard Skills vs. Soft Skills” held on 14 March 2018.

Academic Writing Seminars on Effective Publishing
Dr Steve Wallace, who has substantial experience on teaching academic English writing skills concerning technology, medicine, and various other fields for helping Asian researchers publish papers in international journals, was invited to deliver two seminars on 13 March 2018. With more than 10 years of English paper editing experience coupled with his charming speaking style, the seminars received overwhelming responses from the participants.

Staff Get-together – Boat Trip in Sai Kung
It was such a wonderful get-together that EE staff had enjoyed some sunlight in a boat trip in Sai Kung on 11 March 2018. The staff took the boat trip for visiting St. Joseph's Chapel on Yim Tin Tsai (鹽田仔) and getting to hike for an hour in Sharp Island (橋咀洲). The trip ended with a dinner in a Chinese seafood restaurant in Sai Kung town. Everyone has had a lot of fun for this outdoor activity.

Research Symposium for Postgraduate Students 2018
Around 150 EE postgraduate students, faculty members and research staff got together at the Research Symposium held on 9 March 2018.
This year, a total of 52 posters were submitted and presented, and seven were selected to receive the Best Presenter Awards according to topical track. The day rounded off with invaluable exchanges and conversations.

EE Soft Skills Series - (III) Further Your Career By Studying Postgraduate Degree Abroad
The third soft skills workshop, delivered by Prof Tommy Chow, focused on advising students on pursuing postgraduate degree abroad.
A final year student, getting 3 offers from Columbia University, University of California San Diego, and University of California Irvine, partnered with Prof Chow on the day to share the opportunities for postgraduate studies in overseas countries; tips on how to best present the application; and important things to note in preparing applications.

Applied Social Sciences Outstanding Teacher shared topic on “My story and journey to merge Social Science and Education beyond and within classroom”
Dr Elaine Au, Associate Professor/Assistant Head of Department of Applied Social Sciences of CityU, was invited to speak on the topic “My story and journey to merge Social Science and Education beyond and within classroom” on 8 March 2018. Dr Au received CityU “Teaching Excellence Awards" in 2014 and also received "UGC Teaching Award" in the same year.
