Admission Arrangements

Admission Arrangements

JUPAS HKDSE students will apply for admission to the Department of Electrical Engineering (JS1205) of College of Engineering. Students will enter a major (options: Computer and Data Engineering; Electronic and Electrical Engineering; Information Engineering; Microelectronics Engineering) after first-year of study which includes a broad range of Gateway Education (GE) and College/Department core courses. At the end of the first year, students will choose a major of their choice, subject to availability of places and the selection criteria set by the Department of Electrical Engineering.

Minimum entrance requirements

To be eligible for admission, students must satisfy the following minimum entrance requirements regarding their results in the HKDSE.

English Chinese Mathematics Citizenship and Social Development Elective 1* Elective 2**
Level 3 Level 3 Level 3 Attained Level 3 Level 3

* Elective 1 must be a subject chosen from within the group of “Preferred Electives A” -- M1  Calculus an Statistics, M2 Algebra and Calculus, Information and Communication Technology, Physics or "Preferred Electives B” -- Chemistry, Biology
** Any elective subject not used as Elective 1 can be used as Elective 2, with the exception: if an applicant has taken the HKDSE for both M1 and M2, only one of M1/M2 may be used as his/her elective subject. Applied Learning subjects are not counted as elective subjects.

Assessment of Applications

For applicants who have fulfilled the minimum entrance requirements, we use the “Best 5 Subjects (include English and Mathematics)” to prioritize our selection of applicants.

The “Best 5 Subjects (include English and Mathematics)” criterion is the summative score of the applicant’s best 5 HKDSE subjects (include English, Mathematics plus three other best-score subjects), with each subject multiplied by the respective weighting. HKDSE subject scores of 5** and 5* are treated as 7 and 6 respectively. The weighting is shown by the table below.

Course Weighting
English, Mathematics 2
Preferred Electives A: M1 – Calculus and Statistics, M2 – Algebra and Calculus, Information and Communication Technology, Physics 2
Preferred Electives B: Chemistry, Biology 1.5
All other courses 1

Other Considerations

When considering the priority list of student applicants, we mainly consider subject results that were obtained in current and past two years, i.e. 2022 to 2024 DSE results.

Reference will be made to other information [(e.g. band choice, interview, school principal’s nominations, discipline-related subjects, and other experiences and achievements in competitions / activities (OEA).]

Flexible Admission Arrangement for JUPAS Applicants

In the academic year 2023/24, JUPAS applicants who have attained the “4+2” score specified by individual Colleges / Schools but whose result in only one core subject is one grade below the level required for programme admission may still have the opportunity to gain a place at CityU. Local students admitted under the 'flexible admission arrangement' may also receive an entrance scholarship if they meet the criteria of the scholarship award. Please find more details from here.
