CityU Underwater Robotics Team
Introduction
CityU Underwater Robotics is a student-run underwater robotics team operating at the City University of Hong Kong. The team’s objective is to design and build a robot for international competitions, engage public participation and interest in the industry by outreach and STEM workshops, and ultimately extend the robot application into real-life usage. Our team will join two main competitions annually: Singapore AUV Competition and MATE ROV Competition.
JUNEER Training Program
Our underwater robotics team recruits new members by our JUNEER Training Program annually, in which the participants are divided into numerous small groups and work together on a simple robotic project.
A Task-based competition would be held to test their machines at the end of the training. Through the training and competition, candidates with good problem-solving skills and spirit of teamwork would be invited to join extra training as our new JUNEER team members.
The JUNEER members would build their autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) to participate in the Singapore AUV Competition. With the experience on the AUV production, JUNEER would be merged to FRONTEER and work on the remotely operated vehicle (ROV).
The JUNEER training program would be held around September and October annually. If you are interested in robotics, please do not miss the invitation sent through CityU email!

Digital Entertainment Leadership Forum 2021
CityU Underwater Robotics Team (UR Team) enjoyed holding the underwater football show match with Cyberport team at the Digital Entertainment Leadership Forum 2021. UR Team shared the challenges facing during the development of underwater robot to the public and organized workshops for constructing basic ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) to motivate the public to get more understanding of the underwater robotics.
STEM Project
To promote STEM education, UR Team also organizes workshops and participates in public exhibitions. UR Team believes having hands-on experience of underwater robotics by building a simple version of ROV would help young generation to explore more about engineering. The UR team also offered support in the MATE HK IEEE OES Scout and Navigator Regional ROV Competition to facilitate the development of underwater robotics for the children.
MATE ROV Competition 2023
The MATE ROV competition challenges K-12, community college, and university students worldwide to design and build ROVs to tackle missions modeled after scenarios from the ocean workplace. The competition’s class structure of beginner, intermediate, and advanced complements the education pipeline by providing students with the opportunity to build upon their skills – and the application of those skills – as they engineer increasingly more complex ROVs for increasingly more complex mission tasks.
In 2023, CityU Team achieved recording highest rank of #4 over more than 20 on-site teams in the 2023 MATE ROV championship held in the USA Denver.
