CityU Underwater Robotics Team
Introduction
CityU HK – UR, established in 2017, is a student-led research team primarily focused on underwater robotics competitions. It comprises over 30 students from various departments, including EE, CS, MNE, BME, SDSC, and MSE. We aim to learn and research underwater robotics technologies through STEM education, including mechanical architecture, electronic system integration, motion control, visual perception, navigation, and planning. Based on that, we comprehensively cultivate students' communication skills, leadership, initiative, and critical thinking. Our team will join two main competitions annually: the Singapore AUV Competition and MATE ROV Competition.
JUNEER Training Program
Our underwater robotics team recruits new members by our JUNEER Training Program annually, in which the participants are divided into numerous small groups and work together on a simple robotic project.
A Task-based competition would be held to test their machines at the end of the training. Through the training and competition, candidates with good problem-solving skills and spirit of teamwork would be invited to join extra training as our new JUNEER team members.
The JUNEER members would build their autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) to participate in the Singapore AUV Competition. With the experience on the AUV production, JUNEER would be merged to FRONTEER and work on the remotely operated vehicle (ROV).
The JUNEER training program would be held around September and October annually. If you are interested in robotics, please do not miss the invitation sent through CityU email!

Event
Digital Entertainment Leadership Forum 2021
CityU Underwater Robotics Team (UR Team) enjoyed holding the underwater football show match with Cyberport team at the Digital Entertainment Leadership Forum 2021. UR Team shared the challenges facing during the development of underwater robot to the public and organized workshops for constructing basic ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) to motivate the public to get more understanding of the underwater robotics.
STEM Project
To promote STEM education, UR Team also organizes workshops and participates in public exhibitions. UR Team believes having hands-on experience of underwater robotics by building a simple version of ROV would help young generation to explore more about engineering. The UR team also offered support in the MATE HK IEEE OES Scout and Navigator Regional ROV Competition to facilitate the development of underwater robotics for the children.
MATE ROV Competition 2024
This year, the CityU HK UR Team got 3rd place in the MATE ROV Hong Kong Regional Competition in April and 3rd place in the Explorer Class of the MATE ROV World Championship held in the USA in June.
The MATE ROV Competition is a global underwater robotics challenge that engages the community of learners each year, especially for high school and college students. Tasks of MATE ROV are relevant to the solutions of Global Ocean Problems, and we need to simulate the progress of solution implementation. This year, this competition focuses on ocean observing assets for data collection, reimagining the utility of telecommunications cables, coral protection, and deploying float engines to monitor ocean health, not only ROV construction. There are more than 80 teams from 30+ countries and regions taking part in this activity this year.
Achievements:
2024 – 3rd place in the Explorer Class of MATE ROV World Championship, USA
2024 – 3rd place in the Explorer Class of MATE ROV Regional Competition, Hong Kong
2024 – IEEE OES Engineering Quality Award in Singapore AUV Challenge
2023 – 4th place in the Explorer Class of MATE ROV World Championship, USA
2019 – Most Innovative Engineering Award in Singapore AUV Challenge
2019 – 5th place in the Explorer Class of MATE ROV World Championship, USA
