RMB 1.25 Million Awarded by the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province for Establishment of “The Greater Bay Area Joint Laboratory of Big Data Imaging and Communications”
Prof K M Luk, Prof C H Chan and Dr Steve Wong have been awarded RMB1.25 million by the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province (廣東省財政廳科技創新戰略專項資金(粵港澳聯合實驗室等)項目) for establishing The Greater Bay Area Joint Laboratory of Big Data Imaging and Communications. This project is led by Shenzhen Academy of Information and Communication Technology and in collaboration with Shenzhen University and 5 companies in mainland China. The total funding amount is RMB 5 million and the CityU’s share is RMB 1.25 million. There is also RMB 16 million from the supporting industrial parties. The construction period of the Joint Laboratory is first set as 3 years. It will receive continuous funding support upon satisfactory completion of the first term of construction.

Project Objectives |
The mission of the Joint Laboratory is to sustain smart city development in the core technological areas in big data, imaging, and communications. They will output state-of-the-art technologies for 5G, 6G, big data, imaging, and communications through cross-disciplinary integration, and collaborative innovation of industry and academia. The outputs through this joint platform will provide scientific, industrial, and social impacts in the cities of Greater Bay Area and across the globe. |
In 2019, the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province initiated the construction of the first batch of 10 joint laboratories, which achieved good results in providing key support for Guangdong's economic and social development. In 2020, the second batch of 10 joint laboratories are approved. All leading principals in the joint laboratory must be international and national leaders in the field. The approved “The Greater Bay Area Joint Laboratory of Big Data Imaging and Communications” is the first joint laboratory in the field of information and communication technology.
